Except the 25 metre waves that swept through the southern coastal areas of Chile, that wiped out entire small camp populations in the middle of the night without warning, without care. Thousands are reported to be missing, as those areas are completely gone from the map with no one to be seen.

Chilean Quake May Have Shortened Earth Days

JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27 quake. Using a complex model, he and fellow scientists came up with a preliminary calculation that the quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).

Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis. Gross calculates the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis (the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet)

Yeah, lots of our closer family is from Valparaiso, Santiago, and north of there. And luckily my mom and brother came back just short of 2 weeks ago from a long trip from down there (my mom was there for four months). So we were lucky to not have gotten any bad news, but we've been watching the news from Chile, and its pretty scary down there right now. Reports of the aftermath are coming in hourly about new findings and disapearances of people all over Chile. So its not as bad as Haiti but still pretty bad regardless. And im sure some friends of our families have been less fortunate with their families back home, so we feel really bad for all of them.

The powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile, killing more than 700 people and triggering a tsunami alert, may also have shifted the planet's axis and shortened the length of each Earth day.s
