+1 man really smart advice. What I really care is the speed of my production and CPU load on my computer and for the last month I have never had any problems with my build and is screaming fast with OmniSphare (3 instances), Sylenth (3-4 instances), Alchemy (2-3 inst.) plus much more loops, FX, ..... --> usage max so far was 45%. So please tall me that I make a wrong choice.

PS --> this is your money and definitely your decision, so make smart choice. If you need any more info/fact please let me know. Very important is your OS, with my Windows Server 64 bit I can restart my computer in 16 sec and shut down in 6 sec.

Cheers

On my Intel quad core 2.4GHz I overclocked 0.6Ghz (so it's 3Ghz now) without any special features, just the stock cooling etc. Technically that's a bigger margin/upgrade than yours ;).

Never had it hit it's limit thus far :)

I couldn't agree more with Kit's post on the previous page. Just go with Intel it's the top of the line right now and get a video card a bit later if you still need it then.

Just go with an Imac and stop thinking about silly gamer things such as CPU cycles and just concentrate on making music and increasing your workflow.

Oh yeah and Trancelover, can you tell me how to tweak WinOS to prioritize audio up the scale?

Thanks for any help, very appreciated!

You don't have to do anything unless you are using Windows Server 64 bit, than you have to shift audio/multimedia priority to high in registry (so by nature of the Server ver. audio is not the highest priority). Send me PS and I will tell you exactly what to do, it is very simple process and will take you 5 min to complete this task.

Dude, CPU clock speed is only half the story. You need to look at the fact that i7s overclock themselves, shut off cores automatically to optimise single threaded applications, have a different cache arrangement, and have a better instruction set than AMDs. AMDs may appear a tiny bit faster, but a good i7 will be more efficient with the clock cycles it has.

So really, its great for people who want to compete in a dick swinging contest "Oh look, my CPU is faster than yours!" But its not so great for actually producing multimedia.

^^^Yep. Anyone who thinks clock speed should be the main focus is clearly stuck in 2005 with software from back then too.
Seriously, do none of you read newspapers at all? Developments in technology like Kit just pointed out don't exactly go by unnoticed in the media

Intel has been moving away from that mindframe for years now.

Its just annoying that people are spending thousands of dollars on gear without even bothering to search the information here, let alone actually researching the best option on the wider internet.

Same goes for a lot of those buying virus TIs and such under the assumption that it'll improve their tracks.

Fledz
Same for lots of people who buy Macs too (No I don't hate Macs, I'm just using it as an example. Though I do hate Apple...yet I own two iPods. Go figure :wtf: )

There's plenty of other things too. Are we getting dumber as a species?

Newegg.com order for around $850.00 ---> It is over a month and let me tall you that this bloody AMD is doing a fantastic job so far and for $850 you can't go wrong and in 2-3 years you will have to upgrade it (any computer) anyway so $850 is a deal for me. As I mention before, done some testing, have my argument with my son (I was after Intel, he was the AMD guy) and I lost. I spend last 20 years working on (first on UNIX) computers as admin, so a lot of this stuff we discussing here are well know to me. Another very important thing we are missing here is OS and how you going to setup your OS + how much crap you going to load on your computer (games, anivirus, bla, bla, bla ......).

Let me know if you need any more help or have any more questions.

Cheers
