YO!

so lately i've been stepping away from the trance/"Serious" edm (techno, house etc), and started making some dnb, and even a few trip-hop tracks...

I've also recorded some live instruments for the first time, including some live Oboe, as my cousin plays in the Melbourne orchestra...

It's awesome fun recording real instruments, and just messing with some styles i'm not accustomed to...

any of you guys regularly explore more 'musical' genres, or you usually just stick to EDM?

i first started music production with hiphop ejay back in 2000 :p

does that count?

Trance is not serious EDM now? lol, just kiddin

but I've been trying to do some hip hop stuff, some jazz piano stuff and lots of downtempo sorts of things. I eventually want to get to do some trip-hop but I don't know the first thing about it.

I do some pop! It's amzing how much that benefits from edm production, if can produce edm, you can produce almost everything ... sort of

I haven't made a proper trance track in the last year and, actually, trance is only a small portion of what I make. I have a few trance tracks in the works, but only because they're collaborations with trance guys. Most of my music nowadays is more house-ish and downtempo/chillout stuff, but I also produce some pop/rock stuff for the singers that I collaborate with.

i sometimes dont make 4x4 kick but some breaks instead.
luckily i never manage to finish any of them.

I produce rock and metal tracks. Anything from indie rock to death metal. I was a guitar player long before I discovered EDM. I listen to a lot of alternative rock and metal, so that's what I've been writing/recording lately. What I've learned from EDM production, works with all styles of music.

I've made trip-hop. Also a couple of joke tracks like a remix of the "whipass" song from a few years ago, lol. And I used to play the oboe years ago but I never recorded it... I guess that doesn't really count.

Even further back than that I played around with orchestral and demostyle tracks, but neither were very good, we're talking more than 10 years ago when I used the term "tracker" instead of "sequencer."

It's definitely refreshing every now and then to just crank out whatever's on your mind and not worry about crap like a "DJ friendly intro" or a 7-minute track length.

i aint done for a while but i used to try my hardest to copy stuff like prodigy, orbital and leftfield it was difficult seen as i make stuff like armin, ferry and tiesto!!

Definitely, i think the last part is whats fun about it: no stupid rules.

I love making trip hop beats, so fun and freeing after kick snare kick snare :p

I'll post up a sample tonight :)

Trying to mix 30+ channe trance tracks definitely makes other styles easier to produce too...
EgosXII
oh and digi, making joke tracks is great fun too: i recently entered that T-Pain remix contest for 'Take your shirt off', one of the worst tracks ever, but it was fun making some true trash :)

also made a track for my a year or so ago heavily sampling the little rascals, using the bit when alfalfa sings "you are so beautiful to me" as the break cause she liked that film when she was young :haha:

ANYYYYWAYs, here's a really rough first cut of the kinda trip-hop track i was talking about, havn't finished it etc, but yeah, nice kinda chillouty, working on 2 other trip hoppy ones too since this got me rollin :p

it's 'creating the wave' or whatever soundcloud does when you just upload stuff, but should be up soon :)
