Suggest a Headphone (pg. 4)

Richie - I respect your opinion x100. You know that. But I do disagree here. For listening purposes, a closed headphone (in my opinion) is more desirable. For an audiophile maybe a flat response AKG K701 would tickle their pickle, but you have to take into context what the guy is asking for. I'm 99% sure he's going to want that sweet sounding bass that only a closed headphone can give you along with just the overall sound in general. This is just my opinion. We've all got one. I respect yours but I just personally disagree.

again , why are you suggesting a close ended headphone. They are tiresome on the ears and only have use for djing or tracking. Using open headphones for listening is headphones 101.

I don't know about you but I like my audio to be powerful and clear if i'm just listening or if i'm producing. Also, since he asked this in the production forum I assume he'll use these for production too. I know of a few big name artists that use them.

well if you like your audio clear, then open ended headphones is what you want. Closed headphones add all kinds of resonances that are not in the initial source. If you want a rave in your head that will most likely kill the little hairs in your inner ear, then perhaps the added bass that accompanies closed cans might be a better choice.

It's not really just "added" bass. If you get a chance then try out the sennys, The bass fills your head and is really tight and clear, not boomy or muddy. The bass response from these headphones has really helped when i'm making my tracks.

But it's not just the bass, the entire frequency range is tight on these things and flat from what I can tell.

I use closed head-phones and aside from some minor ringing in my ears, I haven't had any problems - and the ringing is getting less and less, each time I use them.

BTW, on your last recording, all I could hear were the lower octaves of the piano. You might want to get your high-end mic checked out.
RichieV
As far as the piano comment, I think you need to get your ears checked out. Especially the ringing you mentioned. That doesn't sound good at all.

So.. Any tips or comments on that?

stay far far away from these, there do seem to sound awesome at first but they are very very tiring on ears and head. I still have a pair but do not use them anymore (i also have hd25s)

WHAT!?:D

You commented on the piano recording. I think the recording sounds great. if you are referring to the prominence of the lower octaves , this is intentional and it isn't something you correct with a microphone. Perhaps you don't like the piece but that isn't a mixing or production issue. The lower octaves are emphasized because I played it that way , as it is written and as most if not everyone does as well.

Unless you were making a joke then I feel stupid.

They were very well recorded and performed but I was feigning the symptoms of permanent hearing loss for my own amusement, in part to see if you'd catch on.

It worked. :D
