| And got to thinking: Anyone know what type of mixer he used back during those mixes? That was way before I got into the DJ scene myself. I'm wondering what was the "DJM-800" back in '98-'99. Was the 500 even out then? |

I think the equivalent back then was the DJM600, it was almost exactly the same layout as the 800.
If the mix was pre 1998 then it would be another mixer. |

The 600 is that old! Wow I thought it came out after 2000 or later. I didn't even think the 500 was that old. You learn something new everyday.
What was Pioneer's flagship before the 500? |

Thanks for the link. Now I know why I thought the 600 was released later. The black faced model was first. So what was the mixer to have between 1982ish and 1994?
Since it's showing the MA-62 discontinued in 82, and the introduction of the 500 in 94. Seems like a huge gap.
I started Djing in 89. At that time my mixer was a Peavey 902 four channel. I couldn't afford a 62 even used back then. I retired from Djing in 94, so me missing out on these products like the 500 makes sense.

In the 90s Turbosound and Ecler mixers were used in a lot of installs - I'm not really sure if there was an industry standard as such.
Loads of compilation albums in 97-99 used to advertise the fact that they were mixed on a DJM500 - so I think that might have been the first sort of industry standard DJ mixer. I know Oakie used to use one quite a lot, whether it was a mixer of choice or whether he just ended up using them I don't know... |

Bull.
The mixer used for the vast majority of the EM's in 90's right up to about 99, was the Vestax PMC 55:
All of pete Tomngs shows and EM's were done on this, including nearly all the tours. The individual Dj's sometimes requested others but the defacto was the PMC 55. It was discontinued around 2000 and IMO, was one of the greatest mixers ever made.
I own two of these (one in use) and one brand new one sitting in a box in case the other ever breaks :D |

| Haha good point, no idea how I forgot that one :D Great mixer. In fact a club I was a resident at still had a PMC-55a until 2005, when it was swapped out for a Xone:464, I was sad to see it go (although by then only 2 of the channels worked and some EQ knobs were missing) |

They weren't. According to pioneer (which is bullting a ltittle in terms of historical accuracy) , The DJM 500 came out in 1996, but it wasn't available really until 1997. I remember my friend sent me out to find him one in autumn of 1996 and we scoured London for days to find one and could only find a grey market import one (on tottenham court road) that was badly overpriced but he bought it as he has the wong and wanted it that bad.

They also reckon the 600 came out in august 1998, which is also BS. I think the dates on the Pio site are more about when they release the press release in Japan, than when it was actually available.
As for the mixer to have between 1982 and 94, there were a few:
As Stu said the Turbo sound install mixers were very popular and the Eclers were about, but quite a bit less as Turbo domintaed on the install side.
Forumla sound were used a lot in the early 90's as were the Bozaks and Urei's in the 80's.
Some of the other Vestax mixers were used the early 90's such as the PMC 46, PMC 50 and PMC 50a, until the PMC 55 came out.
Another mixer used in the 90's in Europe at least were the intimidation mixers.

I meant Formula Sound actually haha, not doing very well in this thread. Someone corrected me on that in a thread a while ago - did Turbosound actually make mixers then? |
