Looks like I'm gonna need Melatonin.
I have been having issues falling asleep as of late as well. My schedule certainly does not help, but melatonin supplements are really doing the trick on certain days. Take one (I take the 3mg ones) about 90 minutes before you would like to fall asleep and you should feel drowsy a good time before then.
I dunno, we should form an Insomniac Alliance along with Moongoose. :p

I've had sleeping problems every since I was a kid. I can remember getting really upset in elementary school because I couldn't get to sleep and thought I'd "mess up" in school.
I've tried tons of sleep meds through the years, but I just don't like taking meds to sleep. I've tried every sort of sleep hygiene and sleeping method I can find with no luck. Now I just wait until I'm just about ready to fall asleep to actually go to bed and wake up at the same time each morning regardless of when I went to bed. Some nights I'll sleep 6-7 hours, some nights I'll sleep 1-2. Kinda sucks, but unless a couple of those short-sleep nights get strung together I'm not too tired during the day and at least I'm not as worried about sleep anymore.

<3 Irony.
But I´m the same way. I feel like my natural sleep pattern has me sleeping through the day, and staying awake through the night. I was able to switch back to a day-shift and thus "normal" life for a few years, but, like you, I inevitably drift back to late nights and a desire to sleep through the day. But even then, I find myself staying up later and later, and wanting to sleep more and more. Kinda like my body wants to run on a 36 hour schedule. I can stay awake easily for 24 hours, and sleep straight for 12 hours as well, anything else is hard for me to do.
Edit: Since I DO need to make it through a regular-schedule work-week, I find that reading works MUCH better than TV, computer or videogames at winding me down, and lately I´ve been falling asleep with my book open and sleeping just fine. A mug of green-tea also works wonders at calming my nerves and making me drowsy at night. If those don´t work, I find that some nights, I might just get 1-2 hours of sleep (sometimes not even an hour), and just have to soldier through the day. The good news is that I often have NO trouble sleeping at the end of THOSE days.
Nostalgic
I developed a sleep order from an overseas trip about a year ago. It seems like the initial jetlag has continued to this day. I cannot seem to sleep for more than 5-6 at a time without waking up no matter what day it is. Not to mention the adverse effects it's had on my body. I've tried sleep aid like valium/xanax/ambien and it hasn't helped. At this point there's really no explanation.

To get to sleep usually I listen to ambient music at a low volume in my headphones... Works like a charm, I sleep like a baby. Also, take Melatonin if you have 9+ hours or so, makes you sleep alot deeper.
My fav CD's when going to sleep:
Solar Fields - Movements
Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers
H.U.V.A. Network - Ephermasis
Aes Dana - Aftermath
Only problem I have is waking up. It feels like I am in REM sleep for the first few hours awake... no matter what day it is, its like my body wants me to lie in bed awake a few hours before I drag myself out of bed. If I don't have more than 10 hours between the time I go to sleep and the time I need to do something, I usually am late.

I had/have the same problem. Anxiety keeps me up and the only thing that puts me out is physical exhaustion (from working out or running for a few hours during the day) or a nice bowl of wholesome weed.

Yeah, but that causes you to almost never go into REM sleep. Which means your mind is never fully rested.
So it may be easier to fall asleep, but what you get doesn't really count.
