Pay as you go texting in Miami

I live in Canada and am subscribed to the tiest carrier of all time (Rogers). They charge $.60/text for texting in the US, and have no texting plan I can purchase.
At $.60/text, I will surely have an astronimical phone bill at the end of the week. What is the best way to avoid this? Should I unlock my iPhone, get a SIM card and get a texting plan or pay-as-you-go texting? What carriers provide this?
Are there any carriers that sell really cheap pay-as-you-go phones?
Any suggestions? |

| Dude a friend of mine just sent me some info about Virgin in the US having a 1000 text message plan for 15 bucks, and you can get a kyocera phone for $10. Im pretty sure I am doing this. |

T mobile. Just got two... the phones cost $40 bucks each.
Free T mobile to T mobile
$1 a day charged on the days you use the phone.
Text messaging was cheap and so are the plans. (no contracts obviously)
We use these regularly as we travel to the US often to visit family.
I have heard of people with $$600-700 Canadian phone bills after wmc.
As if WMC wasnt enough on the wallet LOL. |

I was one of these people. Good job I left back for England after WMC and never paid it. Hahaha! Rogers can suck it, they are the worst phone company in the world. And that takes some doing. |

| Virgin is great, you pay $10, get a free phone and a $10 credit on your calls. Texts and call rates are cheap too. |

The Virgin plan sounds awesome but here is another alternative,
if u device is unlocked u can purchase an AT&T go phone sim card
for $15 - $20 buy a card from $15 to $100 choose a plan that is $3 a day and u can talk all u want. they have a deal with texts also i believe. |

Why can't you get a texting plan? For $10 you can get the Intl Text Plan add-on:
250 sent messages included, $0.25 per additional message.
Unlimited received messages included.
I usually get this along with the $10 roaming data package ($1/MB - sufficient for email/light web usage) and I'm good to go.
If you're going to be making calls, the $25 add-on for 40 mins is still a ripoff (but better than standard rates). |

This plan only works if you are in Canada sending an Intl text. Not if you are in the States. |

The fact that Unlimited Received Messages is a feature gets me, still can't believe you have to pay for received texts and calls those over there. The fact you have to pay for something that you have no control over is scandalous. |
