Cheapest way to commute to Manhattan this summer?

There's a 99.9% chance I'm going to be working in midtown for the summer.

Being the (somewhat broke) college student that I am, what is the cheapest way to ride MTA railroads for 8+ weeks? Are there any plans or tricks where you can get a set amount of train tickets to use over a certain time period, rather than buying into an unlimited two month plan?

Also has anyone else done a 1.5+ hour commute each way daily? Any tips?

Thanks. :)

depends on where your commuting from.

for points further east of queens, you'll want to take the long island rail road which has a monthly pass but can be costly.

if you're in queens near areas with train access, that would probably be your best best. Metrocards can be used on MTA (blue) buses and trains, they are also offered as a monthly pass which is affordable compared to the L.I.R.R. However the time difference between the LIRR and MTA can skew the price/value.

ask your company if they can subsidize your transportation costs, since its public transportation.

Two options from my exp.
1. Bus from RVC to Jamaica, free transfer to the E train to 34th St.
each way ($2.25/1.5 to 2 hrs )

If you live past Freeport then #1 might be too much time(bus transfers before the subway!!).

2. LIRR from RVC to 34th St.
each way(10.75$/38-45 minutes minutes)

Best bet is get a 10 tripper. You save I think 15% off instead of getting 10 separately.

2.25 and 10.75 is a huge price difference but you pay more you get more. I only do the LIRR if I am in a rush.

My commute is starting north of Putnam County and ending up around 40th street/Ave of the Americas.

The company offers a travel stipend each day, but it's a small amount (I think they're expecting people to live in the city).

I live in Westchester county, which is right next to Putnam. I think it cost 20 round trip for a train ticket, but you can buy an unlimited monthly pass, not sure how much is cost.

Your commute is going to be pricey. Call this # and find out your options. 845-878-RIDE

Otherwise I would suggest you check craigslist or other sites like http://www.erideshare.com/ to see if you can arrange a car pool with someone who is travelling the same way.

oster - we'll be semi neighbors.

I am 33rd and 6th ave ;D

I do monthly pass - until some magnetic forces caused my card to not work anymore.

Waiting to get my unlimited back :(:(:(

Also - my school is 1h 15min to and fro... it sucks at first but goes away quickly. I always have things to study for on the train and my books go everywhere i go. ;]
