Has Trance gone pop?

As we all know the popularity of trance has soared in the last couple of years. However with popularity comes the dreaded word POP! Has trance gone pop? Artists like Alice DJ, Darude, ATB and many others are pumping out hits that are played in the mainstream. Is it positive for the scene that Sandstorm is played at hockey games on a constant basis? I really liked that track when it first dropped but now its reached overkill. The problem is someplaces are still spinning stuff like that, like they're still fresh.
Here in Toronto we've reachd a new plateau. The new Z103.5 has included more trance tracks in its playlist. For instance I just heard Matt Darey's remix of Heaven's Earth and Chicane's Saltwater, something that a year ago would never get played during daytime hours! A more dance/trance oriented station means more exposure to songs we already know. This is something that has been happening in Europe for a while.
So what do y'all think? Is this trend a positive or negative for trance music? Has trance gone pop or has the mainstream finally gotten wise?
Peace... |

my thought on this is:
let those artists do what they want with their music...if they want it played up top, let them play it up top. the song will burn itself out, eventually, just like all other songs in mainstream culture. in the process, maybe, just maybe, it will bring some sort of recognition to the underground electronic scene. if that happens, embrace it. dont shun it away like alot of underground listeners do. more listeners means bigger target audience, more talent, better & larger venues, etc. etc. i feel that the acutal genres of trance, along with many other forms of electronica, will never actually go 'pop', just because so many people don't understand the music itself. thats my opinion.

PS - for future reference, always check for existing threads before starting new ones! alot of TA's in this particular forum will have a cow. no offense guys. |

| Hmm, now that you mention it, there is a cow coming out of me! Thnx lexi! haha. Yeah this topic comes up alot, I think that everyone else is just slowly figuring out what we always knew, that trance is the ing shiat. If it's great, one can assume that 'the others' will one day figure it out. Enjoy it while you can, experimental music and performance art is even getting popular! Look at Blue Man Group and Intel. There will be no escape. hehe peace. |

| U can add ATC to that list of artists that go mainstream, that song Around the World is popular in the states here and is being played on the local "pop" stations. |

Was ATC ever NOT pop crap? Sure they just got released in the US, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have always been making this . I highly doubt they were underground artists. Hell naw! peace. |

I know im gonna get flamed for writing this but wouldn't you guys somehow WANT it to go mainstream.. I Know how popular Trance is in Europe but it hasn't been very long in the US when the whole "rave" scene is starting to take over. I mean, i dunno about you guys but sometimes when i heard mainstream trance on the radio (atb, darude..etc) , it makes me feel like trance is startin to take over.
of course radio's overplay the songs but isn't that true for EVERY song that goes mainstream.?? |

Which is exactly the reason I would hate to see Trance go mainstream! Do you want to hear every Trance song you love get the played out of it on the radio??? In my opinion, the masses like songs that are "catchy" and it doesn't go any deeper than that. They wouldn't be able to appreciate real Trance the way we do. |

Back to the ? I think the reason that Trance is starting to crack into the Mainstream charts is because the amount of people that listen to this type of music has grown ,inableing it to sell enough to get it into these mainstream charts , but this dose not mean the the mainstream listeners are the ones that are buying the CDs. |

You're right, but quality tracks like Infernal - Sunrise are catchy too, and it would be a shame if they got overplayed. The masses like the uplifting trance, preferably with vocals, I think. This type of music is not my favourite, but I like it and I think it's a shame when this complete style gets mainstream. Let's just hope it won't. A few of these numbers in the charts ain't a bad thing. |

As a matter of fact, as some people already know Trance has been a commercial/mainstream music for quite some time now. As far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with producing good tracks, which eventually get commercial success. Some of the artists do not target the charts (and of course some do), but their tracks get recognized world wide. It is not something anyone can prevent from happening (just look at what happened with hip-hop music over the years). But in my opinion, it doesn't make the music itself any worse and surely will not turn me away from it just because of the commercial factor. And since Trance came out of the underground and became mainstream just proves how many people do appreciate the style of music that we all dedicated ourselves to as loyal fans.

When the Dj's start caring more about what the radios want and not the people thats the real problem with going mainstream...
