| Anyone read it? I just finished it. It's not a bad book but I didn't really care for it. Maybe I'm disappointed because the rave reviews on the book jacket and knowing it won the Pulitzer prize maybe raised my expectation too high. I didn't realize how little I knew about a country so close by. Dam you DR are fuku. |

Ok Dominican men don't want relationship all you want is "bang, bang, bang".
First off its confusing when he doesn't give you a heads up when he changes the narrator through out the book. When he changes to lola he still talks like he's Oscar. I can't imagine someone reading it who's not into sci-fi getting all the references he throws in. Although I'm ashamed to admit I laughed that he measures beat downs in hit points. The historical footnotes are long and interrupt the flow. I don't believe in fuku/curses/fate. I didn't like the mother, I know he tries to make us sympathize with her once we know about the oil incident. On the whole very depressing, although I warmed up to Oscar at the end.
Like I said its not that its poorly written just thought it was over hyped. I can see if you're from the DR then you'd have a lot of pride for it. Oh yeah what's up with Trujillo? |

im not proud, its just that most the intricacies in the book are will probably go over your head if you're not familiar with our culture.
Also, what do you wanna know about Trujillo? Kick-ass dictator who ruled the country for 30 years, took all the money and virgins and built most of the infrastructure in the country. He effectively ignored any international rules on human rights, etc, tried to kill a venezuelan president AND killed as much as 100,000 haitian because 'they were crossing the border' |

But not the most famous, never heard of him until I read this book.
I got to laugh at how as soon as a group gets out from under the foot of their abuser they turn around and do it 10x worse to anyone they can find who's weaker than them. Nothing to brag about, predictable in fact.
It always amazes me how dictators can turn everyone against themselves by simply putting them on the payroll. Rat their own mother out. Human nature sucks. |
