I hate to thread crap and all, but XP is not all its hyped up to be. XP has built in RAW open sockets, which allows your computer to commit DDOS attacks (that cant be stopped) on other XP computers. XP is easy to hack into, and the built in "firewall" that comes with XP is not actually a firewall. It just tells you when someone accesses your system.
This OS is still not fine tuned (as 2000 pro is) and will not reach the stability to run for extended periods of time until MS can find a good majority of the bugs that cause crashes. Expect a good year and a half for them to find those.
The FBI even released a warning saying that micro$oft's "security update patches" were not enough to prevent external attacks.
But most these gripes CAN be fixed, yet to do so, you would have to know a lot about computers, and download a LOT of 3rd party software.
and whether you get a virus or not depends on your anti-virus software, not the operating system.
And you WILL crash a lot if you dont have 256MB+ ram with xp.
and dont forget that there are still applications and hardware that dont have the drivers for xp yet(especially a lot of the older stuff)
there is nothing wrong with using 98se still. You may just need to reformat and reinstall it. If you want XP simply for the look of the desktop, try downloading windowsblinds. If you want a stable operating system, get 2000pro. If you want XP, go and get it, just realize it wont be perfectly stable for about a year. |

Problems like that are usually resolved by getting the latest drivers for XP for your video card so don't worry about that unless you have a very old card. |

So, you're trying to say that FOR NOW, Windows 2000 Professional, even though MS will stop supporting it in ~9 months, is the best OS out there? So, I guess when XP's flaws are fixed, it's be the BEST OS? |

yes, this is a valid point. but one of the plusses of XP is that it allows outside users to operate on the com. my friend (who put my comp together for me at a very reasonable price) has XP pro on the 3 comps in his families house, and he's able to support his sister and brothers computers from his own, it's very convenient. that can be a very useful tool in corporations and such.
i've also found that microsoft received a lot of flak for not making this security issue aware to the public when they first released it. i read some site that showed me how to protect myself without a firewall. i forget the details, but if you want to find something on this do a search on google for "Universal plug and play"... |

| I've got Windows XP, and is, for me, imposible to install the EZ CD CREATOR, maybe because it comes with a build in CD CREATOR .. but not with the features. I got a 256 RAM PC, and let me tell ya, it has crashed more than my Windows 98, another thing, Windows XP does not work that good with Mp3 files as it was said, dont know, some kind of problems. And recently I got some virus on my PC and I used to get that blu screen all the time telling me to desinstall the newest installed sfotware or hardware, but no, it was the virus. Windows XP is neat and all, good looking and stuff, but its got its lowdowns, my case may be cause of the operating system, but who knows, I rather have XP with a 516 RAM ( Themselfs recommend that ) . |

or you could download a FREE program like remote administrator (which is 10x better, and can be used with ANY other operating system) and doesnt allow microsoft (or other hackers that have the knowledge) to freely tinker with your system. . .)
and the UPnP issue is TOTALLY different from the RAW open sockets issue. . . they dont even tell you about open sockets. and you dont even need them.
Yes, they fixed the UPnP issue, but the open sockets vulnerability still exists (yet they deny it is a problem, even though a hacker got enough access to take over microsoft's main web server using this. . . funny, huh?) |

allright, sorry, my mistake. i installed it in like in hour, it's just that it took me 10.5 hours to get rid of win98, format my drive, and switch my cd-rom with my second hdd...
yet, i still have a problem: win 2000 doesn't detect my few-months old 40gig hdd |

If the drive that you installed Win2000 on is now in NTFS file system, and the 40 GB drive is in FAT32, this MAY pose a problem but, I'm unsure. Is this what you did? If so, Re-install Win2000, this time, using the FAT32 file system. See if that fixes ur problem... |

heh...been using 2kpro for a while now & must say it's the goods
i was using 98se before that and would be lucky to last more than 24 hours without a reboot...now it's on average a week seeing there's usually some new driver or patch arriving about that now...tho my server machine usually runs about a month before needing a restart...however, linux absolutely s on all windows machines for uptime :D:D:D
been thinking of changing to xp seeing i managed to kill the o/s partition on my hd on the weekend...so has anyone used both 2k & xp on their machine?
is xp *more* stable than 2k?
if it is i might give it a try, otherwise there is still better support for 2k atm, so i'll just reinstall that if xp isn't any better than just looking prettier
and yeah, i've heard from a few sources that xp is quite less secure than 2k, so that's another reason i'm not so keen to change over
