Well, my Windows 98 is a piece of , or should i say my HardDrive, and it's time for me to format my computer, and as well get a new Windows.. I just wanted to ask any opinions on Windows XP?
Is it much better, easier, or more reliable?
Does it function well, no viruses, and doesn't crash often?
Does it slow down your computer? If not speed it up
Is it more convienient then other software?
Profressional or Home Edition?
Thanks.. |

OK. Here's the lowdown:
1. It's MUCH more secure and reliable.
2. It has better memory management.
3. It functions GREAT!
4. Hardly EVER crashes.
5. It's more convienent (sp?)
Home or Pro? You need Pro if there are more than one user on your PC and you want to limit what other users do. You need Pro if you're running a server. Check out www.annoyances.org for more info. |

wot system spec have u got? xp works alot berrer with at least 256 meg ram, otherwise the risk of viruses is down to the user more than the operating system

XP is great, hardly ever needs a restart, very fast processing (and startup.. it takes my computer 15 seconds to boot into the login screen).
A few problems though:
CD Burning.. some burning apps have problems, for instance nero and ez cd creator. When I installed these both, my CD drives went missing, and once I fixed that, I couldnt burn certain files. EZ CD creater does have a patch to fix this, and it runs smoothly now, but I dont know about nero.
Blue Screens. Sometimes, in the middle of something a blue screen pops up, saying something about a fatal error etc, and u must restart your computer. This generally happens to me when doing things like playing certain games, or messing around with video card drivers etc.
..Thats about all that I dont like about it.. everything else is perfect! And it utilizes ram very well! |

| I have XP pro and i have yet to get a blue screen since I got it in February... some people i've talked to complain that CS or other games don't run as smoothly with XP, but thats mostly a hardware thing. If you have a sweet comp then XP pro is the way to go... |

About Easy CD Creator: WHY ARE YOU USING IT IF YOU HAVE NERO? Nero IS ECDC and more! Nero is as easy as ECDC for burning Audio, Video, Super Video, and images (ISO, NRG, etc.)! Plus, Nero supports CUE files. For PERFECT 1 - 1 duplication of a CD, I use CloneCD 4.X. It's VERY easy to use since 4.0! You just select what kind of CD you are copying (Data, Audio, Game, or Multimedia Audio CD (like Enhanced CDs and CD-EXTRA)) and off you go! |

| guys, i have a question about Win2000. i'm gonna be installing it in a few hours and i thought i should create a separate partition for it. how big should that partition be? |
|

2-3GB if you don't install anything on that partion.
My XP partion is 5GB, with apache, php and mysql installere i that partion, i use about 3GB. |

Win 98 == DOS Layer (the real OS) + Crap Windows Manager Layer
Win XP == Win NT == A complete integrated modern OS, with all the features you would expect from a professional-level system (I still find MacOS X to be much better, but alas the mac I have can't run it, hence XP for me baby)..
Now, that being said, if your comp is not powerful enough for all the widgetry and of XP, consider getting Win 2k instead, which are FAR more stable, and also require less juice to run.. 256 megs of RAM is hardly enough for XP with computer saavy use (even 192 megs is okay, but consider having 512/768, will ya?), unless you use it exclusively to type documents in Word, and play an occasional game based on a 3 year old engine...
As for space, my C: partition is 5 gigs, and it fills up fast with all system extensions, virtual memory settings (which I spread though 3 hard drives though), etc etc... So yeah... |
