How much will you pay to stop others from killing themselves? (TTC guard rails) (pg. 3)

its not a waste of money if it prevents lawsuits....they could care less about people killing themselves....as long as they kill themselves on someone else's property. |
the law should be changed so that you cant sue someone for trying to kill yourself. Tort law needs a massive overhaul period but as long as we keep electing lawyers to office it will never happen |

These changes are not being made to prevent suicide at all....that's just the angle they are using. The changes are being made to prevent any lawsuits for people getting hit by trains in the stations. |

| Pay to stop them? Hell, I'd pay to help them. |

so, how long is the delay when one of those suicides actually happen? lol |
suicides usually take between an hour and a half and two hours to clean up depending on how messy it is.
not all delays are because of suicides |

Half speed would be more then enough to stop in time... |
Not sure about TTC, but NYC subway trains (similar to TTC) are 38 tons per car. TTC trains are, say, 6 cars long? That's 228 tons.
Lets say the train is moving at 10km/hr (really slowly). That's 2.778 meters per second.
Standard estimated driver's reaction time to begin braking is 0.7s.
Distance between the driver seeing the person attempt suicide and starting to break is 0.7*2.778 = 1.94m
Thus, if you jump closer than 1.94m ahead of a train moving at 10km/h, the driver WILL NOT HIT THE BREAK before the train hits you. On the assumption you jump further ahead of the train, all 228 tons must stop completely before hitting you to save your life (they don't exactly stop on a dime).
As an aside, the situation takes a lot more time when the person isn't killed by the impact. Great pain is taken to extract the living body properly such that it can be repaired in hospital. If the attempt succeeds, the cleanup is much faster as they don't have to worry about causing the victim further injury. |

Pfft, for $100,000 each station we could install one of these..

Might turn a profit @ 25cents each too. |

I once heard that every time the TTC is delayed is b/c someone has just commit suicide. |
Did you believe it? |

aaah fully automated sans driver? ok that makes more sense for the cost... even still kind of inflated. But we would save a ton of money on salaries |
Automated is a good idea, but I don't think we will have have a staff free subway ride. Can you imagine the lawsuits and insurance if something happened due to mechanical failure and the TTC had no one on board to stop it? |

if they upgrade the subway trains to automated control, it should allow them to run trains closer behind each other than currently which would speed up the system...
i would say that the biggest obstacle to that would be the ATU.
how many people are aware that the current ICTS trains running on the Scarborough RT are capable of being run entirely without drivers... yet we choose to have "drivers" here? |

I once believed that they took "gullible" out of the dictionary. Does that answer your question? lol Actually I think it was YOU that told me that thing about the subways. So I should have known not to believe you b/c you prey on my gullibility! |

taking a stand for logic POV here, if some one wants to kill them self why would i want to stop them?
I sure wouldn't want to kill my self, but people that do want to kill them self have already made peace with them self and are not afraid to die. "If i am not afraid of dieing what should i be afraid off?"
T4L signing off,
Cheers :) |
