Yes they may be big in terms of trance but in terms of business are they really that big? If your not that big i cant see how isolating yourself is a good move in an industry where cross promoting dj's producers who are in business with a few labels/brands is common practice. It could become armada vs the world. Its a big world.

Unless armada's quality of output goes up by about 300% (which will be hard considering they have probably upset quite a few of their experienced producers who will most likely go elsewhere) - i think they'll be struggling imo.

and yer - cyber (and maybe 8ball to a lesser degree) is the only one ill miss - havent heard that much thats too crash hot from them for a while though.

i agree it was a bold move on their part, but i think that they must believe that they have a big chunk of the marketshare at this point. otherwise, they're making a huge mistake that will backfire like crazy.

i said in my first post that only successful shows can pull such a move. since they've been awarded several prizes and whatnot over the years (i think asot won some 'most popular podcast' award), it implies they're already at top of their industry, trance that is.

house, techno, minimal, etc. these are all industries within a sector. the sector would be EDM or electronica or whatever u wanna call it, but u get the point.

another example would be Verizon, everybody knows they're the #1 telecom company in america, well how come their cell phones can't be used in another networks like at&t and t-mobile? for the same reason, verizon realized that isolating themselves from the rest will create a stronger and much more structured customer base (or fan base in our case), which in turn gave them the opportunity to charge the highest prices in the market.

btw, this is all a simple trend i picked up from reading the news report on this asot podcast. i'm not forecasting anything as i don't really follow trance at all so i have no clue how that industry works, and for that matter i have no clue how house, techno and the rest go, i just pick up releases i like and play them out. :p

and to elaborate a bit more. armada is doing a 2 or 3 day asot party in new york, which as we both know will showcase asot to its fullest, giving it exposure all the way to wyoming and back! :haha:

america is where the moneys at!! i think this is the youngest market and the most likely to fall in love with trance.

i guess this would explain a little bit why i would buy its shares lol!

my thoughts on Armada's new rules.....
Now then....

I have seen a ridiculous amount of DJ's jumping on Armada's decision to ban the play of their tracks on podcasts.

My opinion is that Armada's reaction to the situation is a bit harsh but when you look at it its hardly surprising.

If you have a podcast, you are supposed to pay a license fee to the PRS or the performing royalty collection society of your country, similarly to how radio stations have to pay a performance royalty.
Not only that, there are rules to how many tracks you can use from one writer and also rules regarding the use of jingles and speech over the tracks.

How many of these dj's that are complaining about Armada actually pay the license fee and follow the rules set out by the collection societies? Very few I imagine, compared to how many podcasts are freely available!

I think the complete ban of tracks up to 2 minutes is a knee jerk reaction, however when these tracks are being made available to download by DJ's who are flaunting the rules, how do you expect a powerful label like Armada to react!

When a DJ puts up a mix as a podcast or anywhere where it is available to download in high quality for a length of time without paying the correct license fees, it takes money away from the producers and only serves to promote the DJ.

I think a balance needs to be met but until people obey the rules that are in place regarding copyright and the performance and recording of music, labels will react to secure their future.

Ruben from Armada has said himself that the use of tracks without jingles and speech is 'getting out of control'

http://beatsmedia.com/featured-2/ar...now-off-itunes/

The guy 'Silvah' on that page has even likened the new Armada rules to Sony stopping all play of their tracks on National Radio! I think thats a pretty ridiculous statement. Firstly radio stations play 'radio mixes' that are much shorter (usually) than album versions, Radio stations HAVE to pay a license fee too. That license fee goes to the artists of that track via a publisher or the collection agency.
Plus the radio stations have adverts, jingles and speech over the top of the tracks rending any recording pretty useless other than to listen to. You would pretty much have to buy or download that track from a different source.

It is quite easy with the technology around today to cut a track from a podcast or DJ mix and edit it so that your able to use it in a mix, inless it has jingles. The same cannot be said for radio played tracks.

All in all, I am NOT saying that Armada's decision is right. It will effect everyone and not really in a good way, however if you have complained about them, take a minute to understand why they came to the decision.

I just fail to see why it matters if someone plays a track off of your label. Free promotion is free promotion, amirite? Maybe they should be required to list the label name when providing a tracklist on their website, but in any case, people who may not have heard one of your tracks will through one of these avenues.

Lolololol....

Can these people ever learn how to use ing English properly? You have a PR guy from the biggest trance label writing a "press release" that's ripe with grammatical errors...
user19503

and people in music business inst exactly rocket scientists.
Glaniskanis

I wonder if the rules they are setting in place, such as the whole "20% talking vs 80% music" and "interference every 20% of the length of the podcast", are THEIR rules or official rules.

I also wonder if everyone who sold their labels to Armada are regretting it now. I still can't believe the ones who composed the music are not allowed to play the full track.

Thats what happens when you sell your soul to the devil. It becomes HIS, not yours. So it makes perfect sense to me.
