I still prefer cd and vinyl. I can't look at a computer screen all night long. All the years of working on Pro Tools has made me dislike it for Djing. |
That's because you're doing it wrong. Why would you even need to look at the computer screen unless you're selecting a track or spotting the point of the track you want to start mixing out of or into?
The "I don't like looking at a computer screen all night" is just a line that DJs overhear and then repeat it like mindless monkeys, to be honest. |

Almost every Dj I see is focused more on the computer then what's going on around them. My Dj partner does this alot. It's like they're relying on the computer to do the work for them. I'm not saying everyone does this, like you pointed out woscar some do use it the right way.
The reason I don't like using it, because I sit in front of computer everyday. I'm not ready to bring the computer into the booth yet. Gotta give the eyes a rest sometime. There's more important things to look at.;) |

| Since Pioneer CDJ 400's & 2000's have USB connection i am bringing a 8GB pendrive everywhere i have 20 extra cds not burnt yet and i wish that i don't need to buy more , most clubs have a computer or 400's-2000's so cd's will disappear slowly as vynils did , buying the cds, labeling them, carrying them... when you can have all your tracks on a small pendrive. It's the future |

| Vinyl didn't disappear, it went on vacation. I'm seeing more people buying vinyl these days then ever before. Especially the younger generation. CD's and Vinyl will never become extinct. |

So what happens when you lose the pendrive or the files become corrupt? Pendrive's are not as reliable as real hard drive. I'll have to check out your clubs, cause I don't know that many which will provide a computer for you. |

My Mac backs up to an external hard drive via Time Machine. I always have all my files on my computer, plus an exact clone of my computer, at all times.
I want to start carrying a few CDs of good tracks just in case I drop my computer in the parking lot or something, lol. But other than that, I feel fairly confident in having a complete backup of my music collection all the time with fairly little effort. |

The few times I brought Torq out I did samething. The Mac Book runs the software and then two externals for the music files. One is a back up, plus I bring a couple CDs and Vinyl for the just in case.
I was refering to the little thumb drives you can plug in. |

I wouldn't say doing it "wrong" - some might people like to make use of all of the information presented to you by your software, but I agree with the sentiment.
The whole point of laptop DJing is it's so versatile, so you can work however you want to with it. If that means getting a MIDI controller with enough buttons to mean you never have to touch the laptop and getting a little USB LCD display to show you track names as you scroll through so that you can even leave the lid shut, then so be it.
(I should point out I haven't really given any thought to how you'd get an LCD display to show that, but there's always a way!)
Granted at the moment we're somewhat limited by the software available, but more and more will come out with time and what already exists can be tailored a bit using some of the MIDI translator programs around.
I do agree however that too many DJs spend too much time looking at the screen and that it detracts from their involvement - I've always used the example that it's hard to focus on a screen and nod your head at the same time! Using a mouse/touchpad/pointing stick makes this 10x worse.
If you want to break away from that, then you really need to find a way to do everything you want to with as little interaction with the laptop as possible. |
