Formating Windows XP
View this Thread in Original format
Dj DoomForce
Hi there everyone,i need some advice.
I'm about to format a pal's hard ddrive with win xp that takes 5 minutes to get to the desktop(gets stuck at 'welcome' screen) and we think the proper solution is formatting and reinstalling, even though the pc is brand new.

Can anyone advise anything else, apart from format(we've tried windows restore but it didn't work)?
If no,how can i format?i know that i need the win 98 cd,load it in dos, format from it because winxp does not support format, and then reinstall. Can someone make it more clear?
Thanx in advance

Yeah,we did some with the networks, after installing norton utilities and internet security. It stopped dialing up to connect to the internet, and that's probably the f!@#.can anyone propose a solution out of this, how to repair the network settings?

Sounds liek you have currupted them. So try uninstalling and reinstalling yr network connections and settings.

Go into windows components in add remove software, and unclick all the boxes for network and dial up stuff. And then restart yr comp and click the box and instal them

That shoudl fix it.

But otherwise u can format and reinstal xp and have it up and running nice in 2 hours if you wanna do that

Just make yourself a boot disk. And get into dos then format c:

:)

And XP boots from the cd, so change the setting in yr bios, prob atm at boot from floppy :)

I personally really like xp, but only xp pro :)

wtf???
Please explain?
Dj DoomForce
I mean, from what i've heard(never tried it), windows XP does not support formatting drives and u need the win98 cd in order to get the format and fdisk commands.
flystyler
Yeah but u can download boot disk software :)

That is what i did. Or get your dads laptop and make one :)

well.. i haven't done it, but windows XP will let your format. i think anyway, just start it in dos.

*checks*

hmm.. . you can't reboot to dos in XP can you.. you could open up a dos WINDOW, or just go to the run command and hit format c:/

but, i'm not positve that would work from within windows.

anyway, there must be someway. if you have two hard drives like C drive and D drive (not one partioned into two) you could format one from the other one. like you can format D i mean, because the operating system is on C.

so.. then put win98 onto D, and then format C from there? i don't know seems like a of a lot of work.

in anycase, blank out the drive somehow, and then just pop in the XP cd.
