Moot point for me anyway, maybe.

The last time I was in hospital was just over 30 years ago, when I was born :p

What i'm basically trying to get at here is that free healthcare like we have here is good BUT if you can afford it (which you can if you're in the middle income bracket or higher) then you should try to get private health insurance..

not only because it is good, but it also means it takes the load off the public health system for the people who really need it like low income earners. :)

What's great about our health care system is that it's so comprehensive. It seems like people always want to focus on primary care (which is what you're talking about with ER visits, clinic visits, Dr consults, etc), but they neglect to think about all the other great things our health care system does for it's people by way of community outreach services, home health care, screening and prevention, etc. etc. A lot gets taken for granted up here, that's for sure.

Good point, though I'd have to say that I'm sadly oblivious to that kind of thing (you work in the industry, I don't). Different country, also :p Here, I don't really know about that stuff. I'm aware that programs like you're talking about exist (one of the most prominent actions is regarding mamograms/breast cancer screening), but I'm unsure what the govt/general healthcare's hand in it is. I would imagine it's quite similar to Canada. Our countries aren't so different.

Yeah, and well it makes sense though. Most people don't really know about those programs and services until they're part of a vulnerable population (a perfect example is the elderly, or immigrants). But just think of some major DID happen to you - it's very comforting to know that there is always someone available to take care of you, no questions asked or fees required (for the most part :p).
