Yeah, and well it makes sense though. Most people don't really know about those programs and services until they're part of a vulnerable population (a perfect example is the elderly, or immigrants). But just think of some major DID happen to you - it's very comforting to know that there is always someone available to take care of you, no questions asked or fees required (for the most part :p).

I completely agree.

And, to be honest, I would find it quite insulting to be paying taxes to a govt/country that couldn't provide for basic needs like those to it's citizens. ESPECIALLY considering aged care, where these folks have worked their whole lives, paid taxes, contributed to the community, etc.

I fear the younger generations, though. To much sense of entitlement, and no sense of giving back. Human culture is kinda ed, lol :p

Yeah, but we do get to be their bosses and terrorise them for the next 30 years so it works out in the end :p

Quite the opposite. The way things are going, it's the ambitious younger ones that will be your bosses in no time and probably do a far better job too.

I do mean that in the general sense though for two reasons of course.
1. You're your own boss as far as I understand
2. You guys are virtually young enough to be the same generation as "the younger ones". 30 is a lot closer to 20 than it is to 40 or 50.

I don't know Sushi's reasons for forming his own business, but mine was simply to escape the glass ceiling of wages and the fact I'm a completely unapologetic tyrant when it comes to running a business. But I do employ people, often indirectly in a lot of cases, however I don't really care for nebulous business behaviour of employees who for some reason think its a democracy at times :)

I'd love to start my own business but sadly I need to amass the required capital first. Plus there's something appealing to me about working to the higher ranks of big corporations and then shifting the profits into my own business for long term benefit. I don't know, I guess I'm just happy to go through the challenge while I'm still young and have the willpower, then I can retreat to an admittedly just as tough if not tougher self employed business.

A huge thing that spurs me on is when I look at the middle aged, middle managers who seem quite content to around and be at their jobs, and complaining about how the young, upstart generations wants to move and do this and do that. Funny thing is, 9/10 of those young people will fall flat on their face and join the same rat race and corporate ladder games, but 1/10 will end up being their boss, and that's probably what hurts them the most once they realise it. ing hell useless managers me. I've worked less than a decade and I think I've had two good managers in the whole 8 years.

We're both Gen-X, who aren't as bloody minded as the old dud Baby Boomers who still think its 1955 and have jobs for life... and our little friends from Gen-Y who are on occasion overly pragmatic, self entitled and lack focus.

So there is sort of a buffer there in between the two, its quite amusing actually to watch both of them as a human dynamic, a bit like trying to explain to grandpa why he should have a firewall on his computer (which he never uses) and grandpa trying to explain why they should have a concept of employee loyalty in a workplace that really only treats them like bags of meat because they're mostly contractors.

edit-
Most people do the corporate treadmill for as long as it takes, I did. You can learn quite a bit there before leaving, if you choose to leave. If you don't, you do the job well it will give you a sense of security as you go through life, to some that can be an unfulfilled existence and we have the classic middle management rut of moaners and duds... but that first step off the treadmill is what keeps most of them on it in the first place.
Quite simply the fear of the unknown and if they have that near-sightedness not to forecast their own future, then they shouldn't have left in the first place.

Education and experience gets you some of the way, sheer guts and perseverance will get you the rest.
