It's not a loss til you sell. :)

With the TSX sitting at over 12,000 it might be time to think of taking some money off the table if this kind of volatility has you running numbers on paper losses in your head. I think investors are starting to question what kind of steam is left in a market that has exceeded everyone's expectations for the last 12 or more months, which means the negative news (I think today's data that might have spooked the market was Chinese inflation #s) is going to have more of an impact than it might have had previously.

My $0.02 anyways

Not a loss of what? Not a loss of cash, I guess, for tax purposes; it's certainly a loss of capital. If you trade actively and don't mark to market then you're doing yourself a disservice. Holding on to an underperforming stock because selling would make it a real "loss" is just silly.

Oh, and...

Am I right or am I right, folks? Finally starting to see some more reasonable prices. I'm glad I got out when I did.

Unf, what a brutal open.
It's been a long time since we've seen several hundred point swings like this.

bye bye money

If things don't get better by the afternoon, I am selling everything and going to buy back in when things go back up.

I wonder how much lower silver will go down now :/

Greece, an oil spill, a scandal at one of the most esteemed brokerages....it makes sense. I'm kind of happy the market has pulled back a bit, I need to average down a few of my holdings.

I learned my lesson last year... never check the numbers before 10:30 AM.

You've got it backwards man, you're supposed to buy low and sell high.

the way i see it... everything slowly crashing, there goes all my gains. Soon enough I will be back to like 2008/2009.

Plus some people are saying China might have huge financial problems as early as 6 months.

Between Greece and oil now. After China

Lol, every time the market corrects people go "OMG THE MARKET'S CRASHING, END OF THE WORLD!" and that's when I buy. :p

Panic selling won't get you anywhere. You need to have targets. Don't say "I'll sell if it goes down and buy if it goes up", that's a horrible strategy, you've gotta have some perspective, some longer-term goals. Unless you're day trading, but if that's your game then you're moving way too slowly.

All I'm saying is think it through, don't make decisions involving large amounts of real money based on emotions.

Can I ask how long you've been holding most of your investments and how long you expected to hold them before taking some gains?

Diginut is right, without any idea of what a stock is worth vs what you paid you'll constantly be panicking over daily market fluctuations.
