you have to wonder if the media is slacking on the job or if the government is controlling what makes the news. Either answer is disturbing.
I mean, if you know about it and all the drivers know about it, wheres the media? Undoubtedly that would be news, so whats the deal?
laziness or state controlled media? |
dude... (off-topic, I know, but it is at the forefront of my mind right now), I just watched `The Corporation` again - at one point the documentary addresses Fox News` attempts to suppress the truth from coming out via an exposé report by some reporters years-ago and the ensuing court battle...
I would like to be optimistic that our media is more honest but that would be incredibly naive.... politics and money surely influence the news we hear.
:(
... then again, (as I already mentioned), it could be to avoid copy-cat assaults. Ya know - kinda like we don`t hear when people jump. |

| seriously, whats the stats? 1 TTC worker is assaulted every day. Yet this is the top story. What a joke. |

I find it somewhat ironic that he later is essentially questioning whether the media or gov't is responsible for skewing the news, yet he starts the thread with "the TTC is awesome!", despite the story having no bearing at all on "the TTC", its employees in general, or as a service from a rider standpoint. |

i find it awesome that some people dont get sarcasm.
And im not accusing the government of "skewing" the news. Im accusing them of withholding it altogether. Whether you agree with sarcasm or not, the news for this story is still here to read. Same cant be said for the incident jennifer mentioned :) |

Totally agreed, assaulting a TTC worker should not be tolerated.
How many of those people who assault a TTC worker are investigated and then charged though? The TTC/TO police examined the details of the incident and obviously concluded this was a/ serious and b/ unwarranted. |

So true. This is an example of how backwards journalism can be. |

I think you mean publicity ;)
Wow, way to go to Mr. TTC driver, your timing could not have been tier, honestly. What, a day? Maybe two? after the TTC holds a (poorly moderated mind you) town hall meeting to apologize for its -ups and mend relationships with riders, this happens!?
It'll be interesting to see what effect this driver's actions has on the public's (imo: already negative) perception of the TTC, and just how damaging this is to the TTC's credibility and trust among riders despite their recent efforts to manage public relations. |
Meh, I've an employee (we work in a different industry together) who was a former streetcar driver for the TTC. He once told me a story of how some ed-up-and-obviously-extremely-high individual tried to strangle him when said individual got on the streetcar, informed this guy that he didn't have enough money, and the guy (noting the condition of the dude) told him to have a seat and that it wasn't a problem. After that came the strangle-attempt.
I'll also wager that in this particular case the moron deserved the assault, even in spite of any investigation's outcomes, and +10 for the driver doing what he did. -100 for the TTC if there's any punishment levied (but they probably will have to to save face). Annoying Catch-22.
The some of these TTC workers put up with is ludicrous, and they totally get on when they aren't unreasonably tolerant. Definitely not a job I'd want...... |

To be honest dude, 95 percent of the population is fine, there is that 5 percent that is difficult. it sucks, but when something serious happens, beleive me, we get our time off to be compensated for the grief.
Basically, if I were to be assulted, or threatened, I could not only take the rest of the day off but take additional time off with pay until I feel ready to come back to work. There isnt much the City can do because it is assult and it is in the workplace.
Funny thing is recently we (Mississauga Transit Drivers) were given a memo regarding the 2009 assult stats, according to management there was only 56 assults last year (verbal and physical). This was a laughing point with the drivers as everyone knows this is a politically understated number. I alone was threatened 3 times last year, some drivers get it every WEEK!!! Depends on the route, time of day, and attitude of the driver. |

withholding the news IS skewing the news...because what ends up being reported is not representational of what is actually happening.
mere sarcasm? I think there was a little backhand to the TTC in there too...
anyway...we all know why this story made the news and the 1-2 assaults per day that allegedly occur to TTC employees typically does not (that claim was made in the Star article of the story). because bashing the TTC is a fashionable in the media right now.
a video of a sleeping fare collector in a climate of dwindling service and rising fares is a story that wrote itself, lol. sooooo irrelevant to the actual issues, but oh-so-easy to pounce upon. |
