Funny...everyone who visits Toronto sais that the people are very nice compared to wherever they came from. |
we tend to hold doors and we are really good at serving people when we are looking for tips. Otherwise i dont see it. |

We must live in different cities
or its our perceptions...
I come from a smaller city where everyone is overly nice and friendly. So moving here was a HUGE shock to me. I found this city very unfriendly - but I dont think its because its that people are mean, its just the this city is always in a rush and people are too busy to care about anything but where they are going. |
and its not a big city vs small town thing. Look at montreal and how night and day it is. |

I don't know about others, but I definitely notice people's hostility when I travel
in NYC you can literally feel the cold in the air
when I lived in Cyprus, people in the capital were incredibly snobbish as opposed to other towns, but generally everyone lost interest in you if you were not buying anything from them lol
when I visit my parents in Ukraine, everyone looks at you like a hungry wolf
Toronto is probably the only place anyone ever holds the door for others (accept the Asians, they are just plain rude everywhere) |
havnt been to cyprus so i cant say. The only place where ive felt a lot of snobbishness on the same scale as toronto was paris. And even there they were snobby in a "im better than u and i know it" way. Toronto just has a cloud of insecurity that hangs over it and i dont know why. |

I didnt really mean big vs small... I just come from a city with a very different feel/culture to it. Whereas Kristina is use to much snobbier cities. So we are judgine from 2 very different perspectives.
btw Jay... I think you an I actually agree on something for once... I guess that what 6 hours in a car with each other will do :P |

people being in a rush is not a bad thing - downtown core IS a business core for the most part, people need to get where they're going so I don't see anything wrong with it
during the weekends it is a bit more lazy |

it's not just you, Margs
my 'hood is LOVELY - the boys in the gay village are fantastic, I get the best feedback on my outfits lol :) all the dog walkers are very courteous, people say hello and goodmorning to each other all the time
my work area is a tad snobbish (Yorkville, what do you expect) but still, no complaints |

Each time I've been to NYC since 9/11, I had experienced nothing but friendliness, kindness and generocity.
Twice I opened my map coming out of the subway, and I was randomly approached and asked if I needed help with directions. I've seen people open doors all the time, and saw mothers get unrequested help with their strollers over turnstiles and up stairs.
NYC does not fit the stereotype in had in the 20th century. |

I know when I worked downtown I thought it was so strange the way people acted from the moment they got off the Go-Train at Union Station till the time they got to where ever they were going. It was head down and speed walk. I just never understood that mentality. I loved looking around at the building and the people on the street. I found those 15 minutes from Union to Work was just the relaxing thing I needed before starting a work day. |

that's because people have no time for building gazing if they're taking the go train to work - people like this probably wake up at like 5am to get to work in downtown
plus half of the time with all sorts of delays, thanks to our lovely transit system, people are running late - so can you blame them for speed walking? |

Why? I had time to so I don't see why they couldn't take the time as well. Speed walking probably gets you to work a whole couple of minutes sooner. |
