It's what we already knew, but still an interesting read. I'm more interested in how the industry will adapt.

It's an interesting article, although it really seemed to just summarize the same topics that get rehashed on forums on a somewhat regular basis. Also, I think it leaves out one very important factor in the decline of EDM - the lack of musicality. Judging from the many discussions of what makes EDM "pro" on the many music forums, it's become apparent to me, at least, that the new breed of EDM producer that is watering down the scene is under this assumption that EDM is all about two things: (1) the technical aspect, and (2) the "groove", yet believe that having musical knowledge is a much lower priority, or even a hindrance. So, where has that left us? Loads of track that are technically very good and, in some cases, with a solid feel, but lacking anything interesting in the harmonic/melodic department and often rehashing the exact same chords used in countless other EDM tracks.

In my view, EDM producers need to wake up and start understanding that the most important aspect of music is,....duh...the music. But, that's also the most difficult and time-consuming part to grasp and perfect, it can't be learned by following a tutorial, and it can't be downloaded from a warez site.

Reminds me of this, posted in the Music Discussion Forum, yesterday.

Jeez. $1,100 per month is like $13,000 a year. You can barely live on that.

And that's if you're lucky enough to be getting sales.

Picking up on Daves points about melody and musicality, for me I listen out for something new - for example when Deadmau came along he had a sound and style all his own, and I see the notes and chords no less or more important than the tone and the over sonic offering, aterall, sound is merely a pressure wave.

We all have our own view, but mine personally is that making a nice melody and chord progression is reasonably difficult but not as difficult as getting a funky grove that takes over your subconscious and meakes you want to move and not as difficult or distinctive as getting a sound like deadmau or dare I say it Eric Prydse.

I like the pop of Gagga which has some awesome melodies and hooks, but with dance music I personally find myself nodding at a deep n mennacing groove and not a melody as such.

Trance singles sales are supposedly lower than house, yet trance nights can draw the biggest crowds.
I put some trance on (A&B latest compilation) at a gathering in my home recently - just to see - and it was evident it takes too much of an intense listen in an 'average' setting, i.e. not a specific club setting.

The long breaks etc seemed to lose people and they semmed unable to engage with the music, in a typical 'non club' setting.
So I whacked on some Ibiza house and the reaction was that people were more immediately engaged. This style seemed easier to access in such as setting - easier for people to lock into the groove. Also not as 'wall of sound' noisy as some of the classic trance tracks.

I like a paired back clean groove more and more now - not a big wall of sound.

All pesonal and I'd not crit anyone for prefering melody - indeed I quite fance my next track being more melodic!

get off your high horse cryo. music means different things to different people. both melodic content and content without can be great. theres a time and place for both. so please...

Except, those who believe stuff without melodic content is music... are wrong.
