Yeah, I agree. It seemed like years ago, I liked anything labeled trance, but in recent years I seem to be much more selective. Not sure if that's because the way music has evolved, or if my tastes changed, or (most likely) a combination of the two.

it does sound like you guys have ALOT more of an experiance with trance.

being that ive only listened to it for about 6 years.
seeing as tho im only just 22 :D

back then i was listening but not really listening if ya get what i mean ?

now i listen to the music ALOT differently than back then. as now i produce so i take alot more notice of all the different assets of each song. this can someimes be annoying not usually but occasionally. haha but im sure youve all had to put up with this for alot longer.

anyways.

i heart trance. ;) haaa

I produce and listen to trance, as well as plenty of other genres.
I'm also getting to a point where I couldn't give a flying what the elitist wits in MD and to a degree here think is and isn't trance anymore. The tears are frankly pathetic.

I don't think anyone in this thread is being a genre elitist when all they are doing is answering the question posed by the OP. I stated my opinion because the category of music labeled as trance in 2010 has changed drastically from the category of music that was labeled trance 10 years ago, even 20 years ago. Like it or not, the genre has changed, a lot, and anyone who has been listening to it for as long as I have can see that with ease. It is simply following the necessary, and inevitable, evolution that all music must go through to survive and prosper as time goes on.

I used to love trance. I used to defend it to my house-obsessed brethren, and defend it when people heaped scorn upon it. But that was ten years ago, and the music I once knew as trance has slowly migrated into other genres and those are the genres I champion now. My heroes that also once championed the genre have also moved on to other music. What people call trance now is not the same music. The elements that I loved in what was called trance back then are now called something else. So, in essence, I still love trance, it is just called something different now by the powers that be.

This type of migration is not unique to this genre either. Music once easily labeled as "house" or "techno" sounds remarkably different now then it did many years ago. If one is a relative newcomer to this music, whether by age or discovery, it is easy to misunderstand why some people no longer champion the genre like they once did. However, the fact remains that just because someone doesn't embrace the music now called "trance" in the modern vernacular, does not, by any means, imply that any of us have turned our backs on the elements that drew us to this music in the first place. The appeal has simply migrated to another segment of the musical landscape.

I dont think he was talking about the people in this thread, was he?

All true what you say though, I also am in the same boat regarding liking trance 10 years ago, migration etc.
Quantize
Melodic Prog House or Techy music for my productions.

I think trance is evolving and there is a slightly more underground faction of producers who are mixing it up and steering clear of the over used forumlae.

I strayed from trance, mostly because I don't really like most of the stuff that comes out under that label these days. However, every great once in a while, I'll hear a track that makes me go "whoa". I still dig those pleasant surprises. :)

I don't make trance, but it's one of those genres i'll mess around with once in ahwhile.

i'm more of a techno, progressive (gee i hate that term) and house person. TBH, I don't even know what I listen to anymore because of all the genre crossing.

I like some epic trance tunes but I'm probably frustrated I'm not good enough to make them, so I lurk in the tech and proggy gangs:cool:

Trance isn't going the way I hoped. I wish it went into a more original direction than merging into an already massively occupied California state highway.

I want something new Goddammit.

I like it though, and I will probably dance harder than anyone here.

I stopped listening to trance over the past couple years, but I also stopped listening to dance music in general. I still enjoy the occasional set here and there, and I will listen to a dance track posted here if it sounds interesting from the description. But other than that I have pretty much stopped.

As far as production, I make ambient and downtempo music, and noise collages. I have worked almost exclusively in those areas for a few years now.

Sometimes I feel a bit out of place on this forum anymore as my interests and tastes are rather different to those of most people here. But it is a good place for musical and technical knowledge, and some are interested in the rare track I put out, so I stay.
