4 chords needed for every pop song (aka Pop music sucks!)

This was quite startling. The message behind this clip is brilliant.

If you are arguing someone against the simplicity and inferiority of pop music, use this clip to your advantage.

"Australian musical comedy act The Axis Of Awesome (great name, by the by) has brought this to our attention: the same four chords in the same progression has been used for pretty much every pop song ever."

What a twat-like statement.

This is not a new video, by the way.

On a different forum, I was forced into an argument by some kids who claimed pop music was way better than electronic music. It was rather a personal attack, because the discussion was different subject.

There are a lot of people who hate electronic music with passion, and you have to stand up to that. Maybe in Toronto things are OK, but where I am from, people dont know when it comes to music variety.

this guy did it better years ago,

you can reduce pretty much any genre to some common elements though. what if some lady gaga fan made a video showing how 90% of tech house songs have the same swingy 'ooobada - oobada BA! - ba oobada' every bar... would the message of that be just as brilliant? it's a stupid debate to begin with

Simplicity does not mean inferior. That goes for any kind of music.
Also there are tons of elements to a song than just 3 chords, vocals, melody, the beat, the timing, everything combined.

One kind of music I can think of that's truly original (or was at the time) is similar to anything by Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, etc, experimental for it's time but even that has similarities in each of its productions...

Wow that video is awesome. I want to do this for an open mic or something...

Yeah, indeed, I went too far because I was a bit pissed off from my argument. The point is, all music has a common denominator, yes, and no music should be considered as better or worse, or superior. You wouldn't see me barging in on your discussion and criticizing your music preference, but it seems like a lot of people do, especially when it comes to making fun of electronic music. I guess its a a common thing, going back to the days when they tried to discourage people from listening to disco music by gathering huge crowds at baseball stadiums and destroying hundreds of disco records.

I don't think that our music is superior to another genre, but I can totally understand your frustration in an argument with someone who doesn't respect EDM. I just avoid those conversations with narrow minded people.

I had a similar argument with a girl from school who did her undergrad in music, so she thinks she knows everything there is to know about music. She claims that electronic music, no wait "techno" music is the only genre of music that she can't respect b/c all it consists of is rip offs from other music. She basically said that it was all plagiarized. I couldn't help but laugh. To think that EDM is the ONLY genre that samples other songs. If anything, I think EDM is one of the most creative genres, both sampling or "ripping off" other songs and also coming up with very unique songs with both instruments and computers without lyrics, rather than following the same format that your typical song on the radio does (verse - chorus - verse - refrain - chorus - verse - chorus...).

Calling it "techno" was my first hint that she knew jack about electronic music and that she should rethink her theory that she is a music guru just b/c she has a degree in music. You'd think that someone with a degree in music would have respect for all genres, and could appreciate the differences/similarities in music even if she didn't like a particular genre.

Exactly.. I have my ARCT in piano performance and gr 10 in violin and to me electronic music makes so much sense. Studying music from medieval times to present really educates you on style, influences, and diversity. What did this girl do her undergrad in?
