Hey guys, my HDD got the click of death 2 weeks ago and was unfixable. So I did a serious clean up of my music, so i sorted through my 150 Gigs of sets and backed up my favorites that was simple.
I also have just under 40 gigs of tracks, my 09 and 10 tracks are sorted by month i bought them, but my 2005-2008 are a huge mess, being a laptop Dj i don't have hard copies so its hard to find that old school or classic track. All tracks are from Beatport so they have tags of genre and release date. I was wondering if there is some kind of software out there that will sort these for me by date or at least genre because it'll take forever to through them one by one.
any info would be appreciated. |

| Windows Explorer? Sort by "Date created"? There's a number of options in Explorer data accessed, acquired, archived, completed, created, last saved, received, released, sent, taken, visited... |

;) I would recommend that then downloading any program. Why bother putting more junk on your computer.
If the date options don't show up, you just have to right click at the top where the sorting options are and click "Advanced" and then it comes up with a HUGE list of different ways to organize your files. |

lol It's software that I can never figure out. You'd be surprised, I'm not as dumb as you think I am b/c I always ask you for help. lol I know a fair bit of the basic things that my dad has taught me. |

| either windows explorer or if you want to sort it by few genres manually you can create multiple shortcuts in "send to" menu to different folders and then as you go through the collection and listen to it, you can send copies of tracks to those genre folders by right click on track ->> send to ->> house (or somethign similiar). Send to menu modification in Win Xp is accesible through Run ->> sendto command. |

That's what I've always done. Genre folders. However, I made the genres a LONG LONG time ago. So some of the genres I created are pretty laughable lol. I didn't bother to change any of them b/c it would be too much of a pain in the butt b/c they're backed up on 3 computers and 2 external hard drives. (Yes I'm crazy when it comes to backing up) |

I am a very anal music organizer, sorting by year alone isn't going to do it for me when it comes to large collections. :) You should maybe dump tracks into separate folders (categorization: year, genre, artist, whatever you choose). I learned it the hard way a few years back. With large music collections you might start running into problems if you dont organize. Its helpful.
I recommend trying out dbPowerAmp for tagging MP3s, if you want to do that (or with iTunes). Properly ID3-tagging each track is really helpful if you use Ipod or similar devices. Plus that program can edit the MP3 very easily, to adjust volume, edit noise and blank space, etc.
For additional organizing options - Discogs music collection organizer and search + Excel (or other database software).
Oh - good thing you backed 'em up, I always keep at least two external Western Digital hard drives (in case one drive fails).
