So a friend of mine landed in Koh Phangan and he is now waiting for the full moon party on Wednesday.
Does anyone know where he could find out if and where which djs are playing the full moon party? Any sites etc that I could possibly refer him too?
thanks. |

| The DJs at full moon parties are basically locals from what I understand. He's not hoping there's a big name booked is he? |

im afraid your friend is going to be sorely disappointed- full moon parties consist of each bar along the beach in haad rin playing their own type of electronic music- a lot of psy trance there. there are no big stages where one dj spins. each bar has a patio area and the music tends to bleed into that of neighbouring bars and it is very distorted as each bar tries to compete with its neighbour by upping the volume of said fisher price sound system to draw crowds to sell 'buckets'- mickeys of vodka etc and red bull.
all the full moon party is 10-20000 kids drunk off their ass, throwing up everywhere and guys walking down to the ocean and pissing off the beach into the ocean. real classy.
basically full moon parties are about as much about the music as i am about getting to know a girl before i sleep with her.
honestly you couldnt pay me to go back there. it was that bad. |

The party is the way you make it. It's like one giant Cherry Beach party in the middle of summer. Except you can buy booze, and if you venture to the bar on the cliff at north end of the beach, you can get a "Special Shake". Your friend can also try jumping the fire rope if he feels lucky, and can do a pre-full moon party, a day before that is less packed. |

What he said... nothing like it was in the 90s...
Its good to see once but thats about it. I actually did manage to find a good dj in a spot where the music wasnt fighting each other though LOL!
not what i expected, fun still, but not worth a revisit. |

At least your friend staying on the island. I should have done that, almost died getting off the island at New Years.
Tell your friend watch where he walks... it might be in piss or a person thats passed out from alcohol or drugs or bottles and cans. |

we got scammed... basically they got us there and never came back to pick us up. We had to pay a kings ransom to hitch a ride back to samui and thats only after we could find one...
If you ever hear the name "popeye" ferry service stay away.. although im sure these numnuts change their name every time there is a party |

I forget which boat service I used, for sure wasn't Popeye. I remember my friend flipped out on the guy that runs the company. We got there minutes before midnight. We were stuck on Samui for 2+ hours.
Honestly the Full Moon Party is an experience and I for sure do not want to do that again. |

Yeah there's only big dj's once in a while. Most parties have locals, and dj's from big clubs in Bangkok and Phuket. You have to go with the right mindset. If you're looking at the ocean from the beach on the right side it tends to be more house/trance/tech house, in the middle and towards the left its more psy trance and hardcore. I think that Mushroom Mountain is the best spot. Its up a scary ass set of stairs at the end of the beach. You should get a laugh out of watching people trying to get back down the stairs after having a couple of magic shakes. Its nice and chill up there, and last party i went to they were playing tribal/tech/ and some minimal up there. Combine the magic shakes with jumping the giant skipping rope of fire and you're in for an ace night. Its not really meant to be a classy affair, and that being said, stay away from the water, as by 3am its about 87% urine. Stay for the sunrise(and hopefully well after), as its one of the best sunsets i've witnessed.
I truly believe that you should stick around the island for a while. All the full mooners clear the island within a couple of days of the party, and it's empty....gorgeous island to explore...good spot to stay is pink's bungalows, or the place right next to pink's...only a 5 minute pickup truck ride to the party, and its between 300-400 baht/night for a beach front bungalow(book before going), cause taking the boat back to samui is a buzz kill. Other than that; definitely tell your buddy to watch out for cops at the party(especially undercover) if he's gonna be doing anything more than shakes and beers...i saw an ozzie guy get pinched bad in july... |
