MIGRASHUN AND SMARTBAR WELCOME: DJ KOZE
Featuring: DJ Koze (Hamburg, Germany), Ariel Frank (Chicago)
Friday, June 4th, 2010

(noun) migrashun “Directed, regular, or systematic movement of a group of objects, organisms, or people”

Migrashun and SmartBar are proud to present DJ Koze on his first Chicago appearance for a night of intelligent, moody and sweaty tech.

Coming off their one year anniversary event, Migrashun shows no sign of stopping the whirlwind they have created in the city of Chicago. Being hosts to many successful events featuring both local and international talent, the Migrashun crew is now collaborating with SmartBar to host their second event at this legendary Chicago establishment. This night is focused around the man, the myth, the phenomenon that DJ Koze, AKA Adolf Noise has become. He is one of the most integral musicians in electronic music. Never taking the easy road, he brings an eccentric tone to a rotting formula while ingeniously keeping the soul and feeling of what proper techno/house music is meant to evoke. We expect nothing but greatness on what sure is to be an eye and ear opening night. Joining him on this special night will be Chicago local, Ariel Frank, who is quickly becoming a mainstay throughout the Mid-West scene.

So let’s go back to where it all began. It's the mid 1990’s and DJ Koze was slowly working his way up through the German Hip-Hop scene. Together with his band Fischmob and their breakthrough German chart hit full-length “Power”, the act found their way into the German pop charts and a ravenous, leftfield minded fan-base. But though DJ Koze had a taste of pop success with Fischmob, he was keeping a keen ear towards experimenting with other forms of electronic music, whether it be ambient and break beats to wild sound collages from a myriad of musical genres.

Time goes by and DJ Koze found himself as the turntable wizard for the legendary Hamburg trio, International Pony. Their memorable debut album 'We Love Music' (Sony) was received to much critical acclaim and eventually signed by Norman Cook´s Label Skint for Great Britain. International Pony remain one of the most entertaining live acts on the planet given their love for great music equaled with an equal dose of intelligent humor.

And of course we can’t go without mentioning his alter-ego Adolf Noise here…an abstract alter-ego, his 2005 full length “Adolf Noise, Wunden’s Beine Offen” brought together a myriad of samples and grooves into a highly enjoyable listen – demonstrating once again Koze’s love for the fringes of musical expression.

So that brings us to present….riding solo, DJ Koze remains as one of the most integral musicians in dance music. Never taking the easy road, he brings an eccentric tone to a rotting formula while ingeniously keeping the soul and feeling of what proper techno/house music is meant to evoke. This is perfectly demonstrated on his Kompakt full length “Kosi Comes Around”. We’ll leave it to leading online tastemakers Boomkat to speak up on this topic, having declared the album ‘by far and away the best album Kompakt have released…a tracklisting that’s perfectly tweaked for the warehouse abuse alongside music that’s hand carved into the most delicate homespun niche you could possibly imagine.” Well put we say.

His DJ sets are spoken of as fables…each experience seems to be unique to it’s own and it’s safe to say are truly, utterly mind-melting. DJ Koze’s turntablism skills from years of DJing hip-hop come out to play in his sets as shreds the techno/house DJ formula into bits, provoking a convoluted blend of ecstatic breaks and beats that borderline the psychedelic.

Remaining hype to convince the non-believers – the press and public love him and he’s a regular face to the year end charts and votes. Germany’s trend-setting SPEX magazine have voted DJ Koze the DJ Of The Years for 1999 - 2006 – yes that’’s 8 years back-to-back. Other German favs De:Bug and Intro share the same opinion, having voting him as DJ OF THE YEAR several times!! He plays around – a lot. Everywhere – just look at his booking calender.

What the future holds for Koze is a mystery to all but himself, all we can hope for is that he never gives up on the paramont standards he sets for himself - an obvious reaction to the quality of output we are treated to through his music and his DJ sets.

- Migrashun

Ariel Frank was born in 1984. At around 13 he discovered House music and has fallen in love with Electronic Music since then. The particular sounds in his sets transcend from the 14 years he spent between southern France, Rome, and Tel-Aviv. His early inspirations revolved around French House. Currently based in Chicago, Ariel mixes Minimal Tech-House and Deep-House with a sprinkle of Funk. His DJ sets are driving and keep the listener in the moment while creating a raw and sunny atmosphere.

In 2009, Ari was taken on by the Chicago based Collective and Booking Agency, Migrashun (Migrashun.com). His current influences are broad and include artists such as The Mole, DJ Koze, Kabuto & Koji, Pherox, Ricardo Villalobos and more.

Recently, Ari has gained visibility through his podcasts and by performing alongside international talent such as Lucy, Fairmont, Luke Hess, Jin Choi, Tim Baker, and Mathew Leutwyler. In December of '09, he was the Featured Artist on Proton Radio. Ari has also recently joined forces with Derek Fox (Beretta Records, Detroit), to create an impressive live duo known as "Tripuri People".

If you had never heard of DJ Koze, his relative dance floor anonymity might have been lost last year, when his track “I Want To Sleep” topped Resident Advisor’s poll for 2008’s top track (Koze also had two tracks pop up in this year’s Best of 2009 list). What makes his sound so appealing, is his confidence in his own ablility to start with a deep, sexy backbone of deep house and techno shakers, sophisticatedly lowered BPMs and gentle rhythms—and trash the piss out of it with pots, pans, clicks, whirs and, literally, the kitchen sink. His approach to remixes only further showcases his unique gift for making noise danceable, and keeping things manic without pitching up. Take for example, his twisted, masterful sub-120 retreads of Gomma’s Danish dance band WhoMadeWho, post/math/whatever-rock of Battles and techno-crooner Matthew Dear. Perhaps his affinity for gumming up the tempo has its roots in his previous life as part of a popular German hip-hop group in the nineties. Koze cites his turn to techno partly on his preoccupation with both acid and house from Chicago, and the experimentationalism of Warp records from London. DJ Koze’s DJ sets have been heralded as all-encompassing romps that combine deep techno and house cuts with occasional turntablism from his hip-hop past. Tonight, he’ll make his anticipated Chicago debut. (Duke Shin)
