Is promoting events in advance a bad thing? (pg. 2)

You used to see the timing of announcing lineups for big events planned and the timelnie of things scheduled in advanced.

You still see this in LA quite a bit (like Insomniac not announcing until Coachella even though the event was just two months away. A bit too close for me, personally -- Avalon/Avaland often will just post 4-5 weeks at a time, and not post anymore until there's maybe one week left and then post another batch, though maybe Giant is doing this different now with them ), but up in SF it's often a free-for-all these days once lineups are getting solid. More so than it used to be because all the clubs have largely just started posting up gigs as soon as the booking is done. Not in all cases, but surely more than you used to see.

Yup, me posting and letting others know that there are also other things going on at Circus, is gonna affect your money big time. Paleez!

If people I know or don't know want to know about Disco nights, Fetish nights, whatever nights... I'm going to let them know. I want people to come to Circus and it's up to them to enjoy which ever music they want to listen/dance to. Gene has never had as problem with that.

yeah but when you go anf post up their flyer to get in for only $5 instead of paying $15 then what you call that? I thought we drop this, but since you are bringing it up now, I thank you for not helping anymore.

Hi Bas, I don't think she is talking about you buddy. It goes deeper then that. Internal!!! So please keep on what you're doing best.

Thanks,

Ah very well, apologies to both of you.

I have to say, I always find it kinda funny when the internal workings of club life come out in public and everyone realizes we're all just regular people :p

If someone is being paid to help a promoter out and then promotes another flyer that has a bigger discount or free guestlist info it, that can be looked down upon by the promoter you're supposed to be helping -- you're potentially hurting the business you are trying to help make money for. I know in the past some clubs didn't want side room promoters promoting on TA because of the exposure it'd give to the discount or free list, which is just intended for a small group who would be interested in what's playing in the main room.

If someone is just helping a "club" (not promoter) or just an EDM fan and starts posting the flyer or info from a sideroom with a better hookup...well, this is TA. That's just what's going to happen and should be expected to happen if someone finds out about the list/discount/whatever through the side room.

That said, every other club usually promotes the side room lineup with their flyer & other info on the internet. Even when there's seperate promoters.

So much "politics" of business going down :P

I just wanted to chime in my 2cents that I appreciate knowing about events WAY in advance because if I like an artist enough, I'm buying tickets ASAP to save $$. It's really nice to get tickets for $10/$20/or however cheap they start before they go all the way up to $40 and what not.

If people are concerned about upcoming events within 2 weeks being pushed back, then perhaps they could either browse the forums looking for events more often, just scroll back further pages, or say if you're hella interested in the party and aren't promoting it, just bump it up :P

I was talking about Bas deleting. :p

THAT WAS NEVER MY INTENTION and it's not like there are/were a load of people showing up at the cheaper price. There probably weren't any people that showed up cuz they saw the flyer. The other thing is some of those people are CIRCUS regulars.

I'd rather have people come to my club for $5.00 or $10.00 than to not show up at all.

oh and we did drop it. You're the one that brought it up by posting all that you did.

Anyway... keep on dancing.

I believe there is an optimum time for marketing a one time event or a monthly. Go too early, it loses is hype. Go too late, and not everybody hears about it.

If one is throwing a weekly though, then the earlier, the better.

for the out of towners, the sooner the better. dont find myself having to buy tickets too often, but if i did have to, i'd want to get them at the starting price.
why pay $45 for a show, when you could have paid $15?

I do not think there is anything wrong with getting the word out early for events. It gives the promoters more time to push the events and get people in.
I like it b/c I can better plan my weekends/ shifts for work. I have to work most Saturdays so if there is an event I really want to go on Friday I have time to ask for it off so they can not say no.
Tickets are also cheaper!! If I am going out of town for something I have more time to find a cheaper flight and hotel room. :)

posting an event months in advance is fine if the thread is maintained by insightful information such as recent (good) mixes, recent (good) releases, recent news about hot labels and aliases the headliner is working under, like that. what hurts an event is when it's filled with a bunch of vacuous hype by the same mindless sycophants everyone has come to quietly recognize. when all you see is those same people regurgitating the same superlative cliches into every thread with no measure of qualitative reflection, then the very idea of expressing the same level of interest in it as them becomes unpalatable.
