Pete Tong on the music industry, superstar DJs and Beatport

A lot of people on TA say we have no idea how the music industry works and much of the discussion here about DJs, web labels and people like Deadmau5 is just speculation by "armchair ravers". So here's an interesting interview with Pete Tong, part of the Guardian's big feature on the changing face of dance music and DJs. Tong's not exactly a brilliant DJ but he's been in the industry since 1983, running one of the biggest ever dance music labels and becoming a hugely successful DJ.

He talks about the original superstar DJs, Sasha and Paul Oakenfold, the "death of dance music" and its subsequent rebirth, the rise of Beatport and Deadmau5 and the radical changes in how the industry works. It's also a video interview:

Also included in the feature are interviews with Deadmau5, the Swedish House Mafia and Marshall Jefferson, as well as a lot of guff written and spoken by Paul Morley:

Interesting interview, thanks for sharing.:)

the Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5 interviews are good listens.

"changing face of commercial dance music" is a better term. And the changes they are talking about are a product of immense growth and raw interest in dance music.

That was piss boring, but I guess some people need to have a "celebrity" to explain stuff for them to understand it. Ironically most of these people don't even know who Pete Tong is.

It's not the fact Tong is famous, it's the fact he is an undeniable authority on these things, subjects that often come up in discussion on this forum.

Yeah I didn't mean my post as an attack on the thread. And I could have used authority instead of celebrity.

I also liked Deadmau5's and the SWH's interviews better.. thanks for sharing!

I've always viewed Tong as 'God' when it comes to the dance music scene. Always respected his opinion and ideology.
Ironically I view Deadmau5 as 'Satan' yet Pete sings his praises.....
