Everyone around me was taking bites lol, even Atalla got in on it... then my retarded friend through the bone at some cops who had someoen pulled over on the underpass on the westend of the Beatport stage...

Quick Review:

Saturday:
Arrived just before 3 to check in, got unpacked, dressed and ready to go. Weather was so hot out but was embraced. DJs seen first day: Bit of Ozer, Ida, Jamie Jones, Paco, CVS, Marco, bit of Acquaviva, Wink, and bit of Plastikman. The day was a bit of a blur thanks to a good pre-drink and 4 or 5 tall cans and rum and cokes.

Sunday:
Hungover and was doing a room split so had to wait til our room was ready. Got there for beginning of Martinez. Others seen: Buttrich, Cassy, Hawtin, Sneak, Carter, May. Spent a lot of time at Torino to support Gow. Pretty chill day as the boat was after. Boat party wasn't bad. At least I wasn't sick like last year so I actually got to wander and enjoy. Marco vs Richie isn't something you get to witness very often so spent most of my time on that floor. Music kept cutting out due to fuses blowing which was unfortunate but what can you do. Got off the boat and off to bed.

Monday:
No Old Miami, slept like a baby and woke up around 11 and weather wasn't looking the greatest so was really lazy since I wasn't sure if it would shut down or not. Weather started clearing so headed to the festival after hearing Miami was shut down. Festival was dead (weather and afterparties no doubt). Checked out Italoboyz who were pretty good until the marching band came out LOL. Wandered around for a bit then came back for Joel Mull. Started his set really slow but seemed like the vibe just picked up and things went to high gear. His set was relentless and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Poncho dancing was a new experience. :tongue2 It was funny watching people get soaked who were standing along the edges of the covering as buckets of water seemingly fell from above soaking people.

Was looking forward to Radioslave but was told he had visa issues. Drumcell was asked to fill in and threw down some wicked techno. Def to check out again in the future. Headed to Picotto who was a def surprise. Had a quick chat with him Saturday night and he told me he was really jet lagged so I was impressed at what he brought. Haven't seen him him nor followed him at all since Koolhaus for Ultra Spin years back. Great set and spent most of it there. Went to check Magda out quickly but sound was too echoey and made the mistake of not finding a better sounding spot cuz I heard the set was one of the best all weekend. Ended the night off with Model 500 and Bookashade (so good :))

All in all: great weekend with friends (many who I haven't seen in a while since I've been laying low due to many priorities on the go) and good beats. Took a few days to work out all the muscle knots and pains from the dancing

actually it was the speakers clipping and cutting out to protect them from blowing... when security wasnt looking i dialed down the system and that seemed to stop it for awhile (until the djs pumped it higher) LOL

< DEMF 2010: A Decade of Life Loving >

Withdrawals are still in effect, but it's expected after recovering from a weekend of greatness. I hate comparing the festival to the years prior, because to me, I get a different experience every time; the stories are never the same, and the memories bring as much of a smile as any year. With that in mind, I found that this year was just as good musically as last’s, but I feel that I didn’t spend as much time at the festival as I usually do. Our group of friends this year focused more on drinking and jamming at the hotel, which is fun, but these activities can be done in Toronto all year round. I usually go off and party on my own accord, but I too was a little bit at fault for this. Unfortunately the female team of our group, aka the “To Wong Fu” girls were unable to come, and I felt that the weekend wasn’t complete without them there. On the upside, the shenanigans were most definitely not lacking, and that also applies to characters and costumes. It’s become such an iconic part of the festival that our group of friends decided to partake too. It’s fun to look, but it’s more fun to BE! ;) Last year I decided not to hit any after parties (sans le boat), but this year’s party lineup(s) were stellar! And so.. I love my life 2010!

[Saturday]

A few of our friends went through a pretty drastic border crossing, where apparently they had a van drive by them and scan their vehicle with an x-ray. That’s some pretty serious business… Thankfully we got over with ease. The DoubleTree might be a bit farther than the Marriot, and not as fancy looking from the outside, but this place was luxury! The rooms were huge, and the separate bedroom – living room setup catered everyone’s needs. Sometimes we had different music playing in each room. Can’t deal? Lock yourself in the bedroom to get away from the party :p. The service was great there all weekend long. I had such lovely conversations with the cleaning lady who only spoke farcy which I’ll elaborate on later. They had everyone sign a “NO PARTY” waver… but I’m pretty sure they didn’t enforce it.. come on now. Continuing the tradition of colored fauxhawks, Saturday’s look was yellow, entitled Acid Dinosaur.

This is the earliest I’ve ever arrived at the movement festival; Onur Ozer had a ridiculously early time slot, and we wanted to check out at least some of his set. We got our tickets just after 4pm, with a lack of a lineup in our way. This time last year it had already been huge, and everyone looked like a herd of sheep going around the fences. Surprisingly, the festival was pretty lively. Didn’t have time to take the newbies on a tour, but I noticed one change off the bat; the layout of the Pyramid stage. I was expecting something grand in terms of design, since this year marked the 10th anniversary of demf, but nothing new caught my eye. In the span of 2 minutes after getting checked, I counted at least 10 characters! It was a sign of great things to come. Some memorable highlights this day include: FoxTramp, Raver Belly People, The Silver Surfer (brother to green??), Acrobat Clown Duo, Garbage Man, The Glad Hatter, Grandma Techno: The Urban Version, Zombie Nation, the return of Wholesome Sistas, and Robots & Friends.

After a few snapshots, we ran towards the Beatport Stage. This is where we’d be spending most of the weekend unsurprisingly.

Onur Ozer

It took me a while to figure out whether or not that was Onur up on stage.. His feminine “lesbian” look misled me for a while, haha. His set was the one I was anticipating the most all weekend, after hearing great reviews of him playing Miami and Mutek last year. Why they gave him an early timeslot on day one boggles my mind.. I was digging his slower groovy sound, as it set the dance floor ready for early swaggering, but as a whole I thought his set would be more suitable on Monday morning ala Old Miami. There were some pretty sick tech house tracks that he dropped that had me “peace out” my friends for a while though.

Ida Engberg

My techno wife came up next! When she was announced to play DEMF my heart sank. Was a fan of her productions years ago, and when I finally caught her in Miami last year it was love at first sight. <3 She’s finally getting the recognition she deserves, and it’s not because of her looks. I enjoyed her set more than the one she played here in Toronto at Cobra, last Winter, but it wasn’t her best. She started off really well, bumping the vibe up to mountain levels after Onur’s slower set. I had to go up front to sacrifice my energy to feed her. I think I was more hungry than she was.. but not for food. She played some pretty good tech house at first, but then after a while I got bored when it drifted towards generic tech house. Thankfully during the last 30 minutes of her set, she decided to shift gears and drop some proper drumcode techno! The vixen had pierced me by the end… *swoon* Sorry Babs, this one’s a keeper! It was hilarious when the “Glad Hatter” managed to get up on stage and start jamming.. Ida gave him such a WTF look, bwaha. Some song highlights:

M.in – The Beat
Luca Morris – Ribotrex

She closed her set with a melodic techno track

Carl Craig - At Les (Christian Smith's Hypnotica Remix)

<3. We Stayed a few minutes for Jamie Jones, and then decided to head back to drink a bit at the hotel. I wasn’t quite feeling the slower, funkier house after listening to Ida bang it out at the end.

Paco Osuna

We came back at 8pm for Paco at the Beatport stage.. and left after an hour of his set. His set was probably the biggest letdown of the weekend; It was consistently on the same level, and I got bored of listening to the flat tech house tracks he was dropping. There was no real flow. Thankfully Marco was on at 9, so for the first time that weekend, we ventured into a different stage.

Marco Carola

I don’t think they had the Torino stage last year, or whatever it’s usually called. It’s nice to have more variety!! The layout of this tent was different than it was 2 years ago. They had the deejay booth to the side rather than the very back of the tent which I thought worked better. The acoustics in this stage were excellent, and more effective than any of the other stages. Marco played set of the day at the festival. The energy throughout his set was bouncy and kept everyone excited for the duration of it; a mixture of bumpin’ techno and some flavoured tech house. We decided to jam on the outskirts of the tent due to the place being packed! Carola played some melodic techno/minimal towards the end, which always does it for me.

Plastikman

We caught the beginning of Plastikman, but the Vitamin Water stage was the most crowded I’ve ever seen it in my 4 years of DEMF. Trying to see the stage/visuals was a possibility that was not working well for us.. and we dared not attempt to find a way to breach through the crowd to find a good spot. I managed to catch a bit of it, and wasn’t that impressed. The ambient, experimental sound was expected, but it was way too overhyped! The visuals were pretty cool! Seeing Richie inside the screen was tubular. WTF was up with the Iphone Plastikman app though?! I downloaded this thing expecting it to do all sorts of cool things while Richie played… but all that was displayed were numbers, counting down to what seemed like the next visual would be shown next… LAME!! Such a waste of life…

~Drumcode~

Since I decided to miss out on the Drumcode footwork party (it’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding), I was looking forward to this the most. I couldn’t have asked for a better welcoming as we entered Vain to find the techno queen rocking it out. This was the “classiest” venue I’ve been to in D-town. It wasn’t too shabby, but definitely not what I was used to from years prior; I was skeptical for the first hour or so. The place picked up after 12 am, going way over the club capacity! The heat was just unbearable too.. I was convinced that the fireplace décor was real and working! Ida Engberg played one of the best sets of the weekend here. Her set was night and day in comparison to what she played at the festival; she lived up to the “female Adam Beyer” title I’ve held on her. Relentless, melodic, drumcode techno! No pause in between.. tech house was barely existent.. it was the best I’ve ever heard her play! Somewhere in her programming she was channeling her vows to me, I just know it! :D She played a few Slam tracks including some current favs:

Slam – Maffaking
Slam – Last Sonic Approach

which sucker punched all my limbs. She wasn’t going to let this be easy, and wanted me to give it hard on the dance floor. Dino dance moves must be her turn on. Marco Carola went on after her, but he failed to keep it at the same level as Ida. In fact, I thought his set was very bland and did nothing for me. It’s a shame too because he rocked at the festival. 2:30 came along and Adam Beyer was just about to start dropping his first track.. but the police forced the club to shut down, due to a shooting in the area, but I’m positive that the club not having a license for business after 2 am also factored in. I was extremely mournful, since Beyer wasn’t playing the festival and this was the only opportunity to catch him play. *sigh*

[Sunday]

We woke up after a decent sleep and headed to IHOP to scarf down as much carbs as possible to give us fuel. When our Shaniqua asked me how I wanted my eggs, I responded with “areola”. I beg your parden? Me – sunny side up please. Lol Our toilet had been clogged up the night before due to a lemon.. long story short: Knox stole a lemon, Stefan decided to flush it down. I tried to explain the situation to the cleaning lady, but she spoke neither English nor Spanish. I failed at sign language and annunciation as she basically comprehended that I wanted to dive into the toilet. Mario and Luigi unsuccessfully solved the problem by spilling lots of acid. Somehow they were under the impression that we were bobbing for lemons! WTF!

Sunday played an important day for our group, since we had a whole setup and gimmick going planned. All of us were dressed as Richard Simmons workout kids! :) High socks and American Apparel for the win. But it didn’t end there.. we had prepared (we didn’t get a chance to practice) a routine to be performed later at the festival. It took us longer than we wanted to get ready and as a result we missed a big chunk of the Martinez Brothers. There’s no way I was going to miss all of it, and so we left just after 5 pm. There weren’t that many characters that stood out on Sunday, but I did see the 12 Inch Platform man that was missing last year!! This guy is by far my favourite; I always get flashbacks of him breaking his heel and limping due to the uneven levels of his other boot <3 Others that stood out include Moses, Avatar Girl, Tribe Woman (mushyflowa’s clone?!??), and the Bananaman!!. As we walked to the Beatport stage I took a bite out of a hamburger that a girl was wearing on her head. She looked at me and snarled. I told her I was hungry. Seriously who wears hamburger hats?! Haha.

The Martinez Brothers

I was pretty disappointed… that I didn’t get there for the beginning of their set. These kids know how to have a good jive, and their energy always encourages such an amusing crowd with a great. You don’t want to talk, just jam… and smile. Hearing their big room, latin flavoured tribal tech house outdoors was a great way to start the festival for us that day. The crowd ate their set up like a musical quesadilla. *crunch* Seriously though, I can’t stress enough how loco the vibe was during their set. I recognized a lot of the tracks they played, and usually I’d be bored of these particular tracks, but they mixed in enough flare and spice to make it an enjoyable dish. They played a remix of

Loco Dice - Definition

which was the song I heard played the most at DEMF. Someone else played the Fanciulli Remix, making it one of my favourite tunes of the weekend. It’s got such a rolling nastiness to its sound.. the drop at the end is stellar!

Martin Buttrich

Unfortunately when I try to think back, I can’t remember Martin Buttrich’s set very well. I recall having a blast, and hearing a bunch of druggier techno tracks which he’s known for. It was a bit refreshing after hearing a lot of the same tech house tracks all weekend; he was serious business. He dropped a really sick twisted melodic track that Richie also played later on in the night:

Martin Buttrich – L2

And unsurprisingly played a few other of his own tracks, including the unreleased

Konrad Black & Martin Buttrich - Siamese Connection

Cassy

Cassy came on around 7 and picked things up where Buttrich had left off. By this time we had decided to perform to our routine on the grass behind the Beatport tent. I struggled to rally everyone together since everyone was so ADD, and after barking some orders were lined up and ready to go. We didn’t get a chance to practice, so I had to be the ‘head cheerleader’ and yell out each step. We were very uncoordinated at first, but by the end of it we were in sync. We had quite the audience! I anticipated a lot of WTF looks, and I got several; they definitely weren’t expecting something like that, but on the other hand it is DEMF! Cassy’s fun set made great background music for it. Her set was very eclectic, ranging from upbeat tech house to funky-disco hard house and even breaks. She was all smiles up there just dancing away! Usually when a deejay incorporates so many genres in a set it can flop, but she somehow managed to tie all the songs together; I was impressed. It was one of her better sets and one of the highlights of the weekend.

Richie Hawtin

Unlike a lot of people, my main reason for going to DEMF wasn’t Ricardo Villalobos, so when I found out he couldn’t make it I was upset, but it didn’t put that much of a damper on my expectations. Having Richie Hawtin play a real deejay set was great news, especially after the Plastikman let down. It was far from his best set, but I thought the 3 hours that he played were prime. My expectations for Hawtin are always really high, and he never quite hits the mark with his sets at DEMF. It was still pretty awesome though. There were numerous moments of gasping and oohing! One aspect I did not particularly enjoy was his programming. There were a lot of oddly placed tracks, including Chiapet (seriously, Hawtin playing Chiapet!?) and some tech house tracks that I didn’t associate with Hawtin usually. On the plus side, he’s always got some tricks up his sleave and he definitely had me pulled into his magic hat duration portions of his set.

We checked out Innercity for a bit after a friend exclaimed that I had to pay a visit and that I’d understand why when I got there… I was enticed by the sounds of Shaniqua singing on stage <3 She had such energy and positive vibes. Big Love! Lots and lots of Big Love. On our way back to the hotel, I saw the sketchiest thing that topped anything I saw all weekend. I usually refrain from using that word, but it fits in this case.. I don’t know how to explain what it was… but it involved a scary taxi driver and a robot puppet.. I took a short video of it, but I still can’t explain it. WTF!

~Rubber Duck Soiree~

We decided not to hit any after parties on Sunday night, but I did throw one of my own. What started off as a joke actually became a reality. I had people coming to me during the festival inquiring about the party and if they could come; I thought it was funny :) I brought all my ducks with me and had placed them all throughout our room, including a light up duckie I placed in the bathtub. An in the dark tour was provided to each guest as they entered. Lol. A friend of a friend was sweet enough to bring a new addition to the rubber duck family: geeky duck.. which was fitting considering my outfit for the next day!

[Monday]

We napped for a few hours before getting up for Old Miami. After last year, there was no way I’d miss out again. A last minute preparation before DEMF, I decided I’d wear a bit of a costume. My Dino Geek look turned out better than I had hoped, and I forgot that I had packed Wrecks. He made my look top level! On our way there, we stopped at a dodgy convenience store, where a few homeless people started to badger us from outside the cab. One of them put his hand through the window to shake my hand, but I gave him the wrong hand, and as a result, Wrecks bit his hand! He jumped at the sight of a dinosaur attacking his hand. It was hilarious! He then started to laugh and bid us luck on our travels. That made my day as much as Wrecks made his!

~Old Miami~

We arrived at a familiar location just before 10 am and it all came back to me. The misleading biker bar brought a smile to my face. This would be my 3rd visit to Old Miami. Free candy was my breakfast that morning. Wrecks too. It was already fairly filled by the time we had found a spot in the backyard, and it didn’t take long for the place to be really full. I’ve never experienced this amount of people at this place before. My first 2 visits were in 2007 and 2008, and at that time the party had been more word of mouth. I was surprised how commercial the party had become, and how it became the highlight of everyone’s weekend in 2009. Unfortunately I missed it that year. The costumes and characters were really lacking, and I didn’t see too many comical things.. As a result our group and myself had to be the entertainers for the day. Wrecks was a hit with the ladies, and deejays, specifically Cassy who took a liking to him.

The music met my expectations.. groovy tech house perfect for a Monday Morning. Most people were sitting down, but my feet have minds of their own. Masomenos were the highlight for me at this party! Never heard anything prior, and I was really impressed by them both. I found my match at the party: a cute girl wearing nerd glasses just like mine, dressed as Wenda, Waldo’s girlfriend! Why didn’t I think of this? Haha. The most interesting event that happened for me was meeting this “astral girl.” Originally I thought she was a friend of a friend, and I saw her giving everyone stickers of stars. I want some too! I asked her to do me, and she analyzed my face and said she wanted to pick the perfect spots for universal order. Um??? So she placed stars on both of my earlobes. I didn’t think much of it, but when I looked at pictures of myself after, I looked like a lesbian hipster! Thanks friends for not telling me. Bwahaha. I went up to her and asked for her name, and she said in a slow astral loony way, “S – T – A – R !” I was baffled.. couldn’t deal after all that, and left her. We stayed until just after 1pm. We needed a break before the festival.

Joel Mull

The rain made everyone really bitchy and negative, especially since we hadn’t really eaten or slept. I changed my look from geek to sheik, adding some pink to my hawk. Probably wasn’t the best idea, but it managed to stay put and not rinse out in the rain. I had to take shelter though, and at 6:30 at the Beatport stage this was not a fun task. Everyone had to same idea, and I experienced a lot of pushing and rudeness. I was furious, but thankfully Joel Mull took brought my attention to his set. He started off with really slow minimal, and it dragged on a bit, but I was digging it. He picked up in the later half of his set and really brought it up with some harder techno. He dropped the Fanciulli Remix of Defintion, and from that point on it was all elbow dancing and smiles! This was my first time checking him out, and was impressed.

Barem

I couldn’t handle the Beatport stage and needed some shelter, so we left in time for Barem. The Torino stage wasn’t packed, and I got to experience that tent properly. As I mentioned before, I love the sound in here! I was still feeling a bit grumpy at this point, so I went front row center to dance alone. This was my 2nd time seeing Barem, and he was good, but left a bit of a bittersweet taste in my mind towards the end of his set. He started off with some good tech tracks that had me going, as well as the crazy kids who thought it’d be a great idea to dance in the puddle. Eeesh! He lost me in the 2nd half of his set, when he started playing too much filler. I’m so sick of cookie cutter tech house tracks with the same beat that incorporate a repetitive one word vocal like “yeah” or “oh” throughout the whole duration of the song, followed by the same predictable drop. This fad has gone on for too long.. I much preferred when everyone played minimal cause at least those tracks had more substance for me.

Mauro Picotto

Those who met me years ago know that Picotto used to be one of my favourites. Unfortunately in 2006/2007 he lost me when he completely drifted to different paths. He tried the minimal approach, which I liked, but then shortly after started producing more trance inspired tracks. They were a little bit too cheesy and trancey for my liking. He’s supposed to be the master of dark hard techno. I haven’t really been keeping tabs on him since, but when I heard he was playing the festival it brought back some good memories. Who knows.. perhaps he’s gone back to his roots? Unfortunately that was not the case at all. He pretty much played the same crappy tech house tracks I recognized from The Comfort Zone and alike parties. There were at least 6 that I knew! I didn’t come to Detroit to hear stuff I was trying to stay away from in Toronto. This was nothing like the old Picotto, just another cookie cutter deejay. Peace out!

Magda

I didn’t have to suffer too much, cause my ex techno wife Magda was on at 9:30. The biggest let down for me last year was the Real Detroit stage; it had so much potential and had such a great underground vibe, but the acoustics were just so incredibly awful that you couldn’t make out the music. The sound down there this year was improved so much! No distortion.. and the bass was thumping! I can’t believe I didn’t check it out at all that weekend until the very end. Save the best for last though! Generally this stage is really hot and tightly packed, but this wasn’t much of an issue. The crowd actually thinned out as her set progressed, which to me was a good thing. The visuals were really cool and spooky, as were the lights. Magda was.. how did I put it? Magda played the best set of the entire weekend. It was refreshing, it was different, and no one else played like her. Slower bpm techno/minimal with deep fat hard bass lines! She’s known to play like this, but the sound system down there enhanced it. Also, her set was very eerie and creepy.. like a horror movie. Her programming is genius! There were no bland moments to her set. By the last half hour we were kickin’ front row center.

I left at 11 when she was done, and decided to head to the Vitamin Water stage to catch Bookashade. I was pretty tanked at the time, and there was a group on stage with a female vocalist, all dressed like characters from Star Trek. Why didn’t I clue in at this time?.. I got a text from a friend who exclaimed that Bookashade were playing the Red Bull stage.. LOL! What a waste of life. I caught about 10 minutes of them, but I wasn’t in the mood for their sound as a closing set for a DEMF weekend. I wanted something hard I could thrust to.

Chris Liebing

As soon as I got to the Beatport tent there were thrusts a plenty! Typical relentless Chris Liebing. Nothing new, just warmly familiar. Great way to end the weekend, although it would have been more awesome for him to play the Main Stage. I love Monday night closing sets on the Main stage.
