John Digweed – ‘Structures’ (Bedrock Records)
CD1 & CD2 – compiled and mixed by John Digweed
+ Bonus DVD – ‘Eye Of The Storm’ Documentary by Pablo Casacuberta + ‘John Digweed Live at the Vagabond’ + Slideshows & Extras
2010 is proving to be a fantastic year for music and a great year for the ever-impressive Bedrock Records. For his latest album venture, ‘Structures’, John Digweed has selected an exceptional 33 tracks, bringing together the latest Bedrock single releases and a plethora of unreleased, exclusive tracks and remixed tracks from ‘Bedrock Eleven’, all mixed together to perfection the man himself.
The totally tuned-in, turned-on, forward thinking mix across 2xCDs, not only features the amazing music of big guns like Cristian Varela, Guy J, Christian Smith, Quivver, King Unique, Nick Warren, Mutant Clan, John Digweed & Nick Muir, but also showcases the label’s desire to push forward the rising stars of the future. A glance through the tracklist reveals the impressive talents of Rowdent, Dimitri Nakov, Marc Marzenit, Ian O`Donovan, Sian, Luis Junior and many more. The additional bonus of featuring some of the best remix work from Nic Fanciulli, Pete Heller, Psycatron and more, only confirms that John Digweed has his finger firmly on the pulse of the electronic dance scene in 2010. It’s an international showcase from this influential label that is hard to beat.
‘Structures’ is further enhanced by the inclusion of a bonus DVD featuring ‘Eye Of The Storm’, a visual masterpiece documentary, filmed on John’s last tour of South America by Pablo Casacuberta (www.pablocasacuberta.com). His exceptional creativity assumes that the viewing audience has a certain awareness of John Digweed’s "public persona" and hence seeks to take a glimpse his inner life, thinking processes and his imagination using visual metaphors that can illustrate them in a graphic way. It’s an approach that reinvigorates the somewhat formulaic music documentary genre, and takes it to another enthralling level. NB - You can get a further insight into the making of this documentary as Pablo Casacuberta discusses his artistic approach, below.
It seems amazing that through such an illustrious career so far, John Digweed has never had a live DJ mix made commercially available! But, ‘John Digweed Live at the Vagabond’, recorded live at the 9th Annual Bedrock/Creations Party at Vagabond Miami 27th March 2010, included here on the ‘Structures’ bonus DVD is yet another musical milestone. A live mix complete with slideshow that captures the essence of this amazing Bedrock party for posterity. www.thevagabondmiami.com

@Mark Anthony
from John Digweedvia the Bedrock Messageboard
After reading some of the comments on here about the Structures CD featuring Bedrock material I thought I should respond on a few issues. I found it quite funny that the general consensus is that because the album consists of Bedrock material that this is somehow a constraint!?!? The reality is that this could not be further from the truth. All of the tracks and remixes were specifically handpicked by myself with this release in mind from key producers whose work I continuously play out and support along with some fresh new talent who have not been involved with Bedrock before. We started requesting tracks and remixes in early November to give you an idea of the time that has been taken to put this project together and in that time I have road tested and played every single track on here. So to be honest it was an absolute privilege to be able to have free reign with the mixes and have such a great selection of music to work with, without any licensing issues or exclusivity constraints and the fact that we have 23 totally unreleased exclusives on this album is testament to what we set out to achieve with this album and Bedrock 11 for that matter.
The bitter irony of all of this came about when we decided to include the Live mix from the Vagabond WMC Party and consequently had to license tracks from other labels and hit problems straight away with both a major and independent labels which I am sorry to say resulted in the mix we have been able to put out being shortened. However the general consensus was that this and the documentary would be great bonuses and make a truly special package.
Preview it here and see for yourself

| To John, nice reply but really you don't need to concern yourself with the trolls on here. Keep up the good work. |

Interesting which "major and independent labels" made these problems |

I for one am eagerly awaiting this... Can't really understand why a release full of Bedrock won't succeed, see Bedrock 11 for that matter :)
Also I think it's perfectly okay for Digweed to do so, since like he says (more subtle :p) labels are ing arses. For a very diverse mix with all the tracks you want, you are definitely looking at posting something in the DJ Promotion forum here (see my sig :D), since labels will be not responsive or asking for too much money or some other !! :)
That being said this should be great, cant wait to hear it :) |

If a double cd full of bedrock techno prog gets you excited I'm sure you'll love this mix and any other Guy J, King Unique, Nick Muir oriented mixes that Bedrock has released.
Just dont expect it to still sound relevant when you come back and listen to it 5 years later. I subscribe to Bedrock as a label on Juno, so when they release new titles I always make time to sample them. The label releases cutting edge peak hour electronic club music. The problem is that the cutting edge in 2010 is dull. Producers are hodge-podging sounds together from every sub genre and releasing tracks that are here today, gone tomorrow. The labels these producers are signed to release the tracks to keep the machine going...quantity over quality reigns as of late.
There are plently of labels besides bedrock that operate in this fashion (they have to operate this way to survive, some of them) and trust me, if they released a compilation of only their own tracks, I surely would be just as unexcited for that as I am for this.
One of things that made Transitions Volume 1 such an epic cd was that the cd drew from a very wide range of artists. Extrawelt, Paul Kalkbrenner, Popnoname, Dana Bergquist. I've seen the tricks that mainstay bedrock artists have up their sleeve and I'm over it. |

| Sorry, but I thought Bedrock 11 was mixed well but was lackluster and really had no dynamacism. Unfortunately, because of the type of music Bedrock signs these days, I really have expectations that fall in line with the label and the type of music that it releases as a whole. I'm sure programming and mixing will be good, as some people have said, looks like more Big Room Tech-house and Tech-prog. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. I would like to see him do a comp for another label again. |

It is really sad. John Digweed is one of the nicest and hardworking deejays that I have ever seen. The man does not smile during sets because he is so focused. The latest stuff I have heard from him and others sounds so similar that it makes me want to puke. What about the unique stuff from 9-10 years ago. Yes music evolves and grows but then different deejays played completely different stuff from one another. Now it is like hearing the same deejay.
Hence why I am listening to Burridge, Howells, Warren, Masiello and Mojo because they play so uniquely and have not fallen into the boring tech prog.
Bedrock used to really stand for quality but not as much now. |
