In my experience, I've found that BPM counters (such as the one that I have on my Pioneer DJM300) are basically useless. Having two songs within 1bpm of each other just won't cut. You think about it. The songs could be up to 1bpm out - within 10seconds, that's a 1/6th of a beat out, within 30secs, that's 1/2 of a beat out - yuck! To beat match you have to use your ear, not a machine.
Also, I think it's impossible to ever get two songs perfectly at the right tempo. You have to be constantly interacting with the decks (say every 10 seconds or so) to correct minor errors if you want to have absolutely faultless mixing. |

| I write the BPMs on my records. is that cheating? :D its helping me out though.. I can beatmatch 75% if the time without knowning the BPM at the moment. Im getting better! :whip: |

| I don't think that's cheating, I do it too...it also helps with programming a set! |

sorry, just being a smartass, but 99.9999 plus 0.111 = 100.1109 so you meant "at a higher rate than 0.0001%" which makes your statement even more true :) |

i think this is cheating. IMO i think you shud learn to DJ without the aid of ne tools, or without knowing the bpm. If you can slap 2 tracks down on the TT and mix em, it makes u a better DJ |

Knowing the bpm isn't really going to help you match the beats anyway. I write the bpm's for the reason of programming. I wouldn't want to jump around and play one track at 128 then the next at 144, to me that's not a way to build...
I agree with you though, you shouldn't concern yourself with the songs BPM when learning to match beats! Your ear is your best tool! |

Here's what I'm thinking. I'm not the smartest man in the world, but here's the real on this.
You can write the BPM's on your records, use BPM counters, etc ALL YOU WANT. It still doesn't mean that you can get them in phase and more importantly...KEEP them matched. That's where the skill comes in I think.....noticing that slight slip in the beat before the crowd even knows what's going wrong, and then correcting it and having everyone going "DAMN that guy/girl's good!!!!" ;)
It's kind of like my baseball coach in college used to tell me. It's all a matter of execution. I know that sounds like some cheesy-ass "coachy" thing to say, but it's true. He used to tell us that it doesn't matter if the other team knows what pitch is coming or knows what you're going to do next. it all comes down to them making good on the oppurtuniy. In other words, you can receive all the help you can get (BPM counters, etc) but that still doesn't mean you can execute it right. ;) |

ffs i was just using the other guys terminology. ok, "defeats the object" then. What skill is it beatmatching knowing the bpms, and having a beat counter in front of you. |

| Last Tuesday I have bought 2 turntables and some records to start off with. Well I have to say that it should take a while before I know how to get the beats compleet matched. But has any of you a good and clear advise how to get the beats matched. I tried it many times already, and, like many of the newbees I Suck too :nervous:... |
