Awesome interactive map: where Americans are moving

Saw this in Forbes... this is amazing. You can click on any county in the U.S. to see where people are moving to and from. Black lines indicate net inward movement, red lines net outward movement. A few examples before doing it yourself:
| quote: | | If we look at Harris County, Texas, where Houston is located, we can practically hear a giant sucking sound as the state’s largest city pulls people southward from the northeast, the Midwest, and elsewhere. Most of the outmigration is regional, with some identifiable patterns to the upper northwest. You get a similar picture when you look at the migration patterns to Dallas and Austin. |

| quote: | | Travis County, home to Austin, looks similarly like a bull’s eye on the dartboard of appealing places to live. It’s hard to find any distinct patterns of where people in Austin go when they leave the state. The red lines are thin indeed. |

| quote: | | Now let’s look at California. Aside from the appeal of Los Angeles to people living in the high-cost northeast (you might as well have good beaches and sunny weather if you’re paying high taxes for bad services), it appears the city of angels is losing its heavenly radiance in a massive way. San Diego also looks very red. |

| quote: | | Now, in a departure from the theme of the series, Detroit (Wayne County, Michigan) was so vividly depressing that I simply have to include it. Hardly anything shows the tragic effects of bad policy and under-performing industry than the picture below. |

Pretty cool. Check out the counties around NY City and New Jersey... looks like a mass exodus away from unbearable taxation.

he lives in Florida. Hasn't done a radio show in NYC in 2 years. Like most wise business people who worked in that hole of a city, he would also like to keep more than 40% of his earnings.

It's not about scoring political points. It's quite an instructive application, because it powerfully illustrates the problem people ignore; we get to see the reality of how the most liberal wannabe utopian paradises are forcing people out in droves b/c of their policies, only damaging those who such policies are supposed to cater to since fewer actual taxpayers remain. People and industry are moving to areas with lower tax and regulatory burdens that actually foster growth. Totally understandable. |
