Sorry if this is a repost. I haven't seen anything really interesting posted here lately.
I think there are a lot of parallels here with electronic dance music and what its been suffering from over the years.
Part 6 touches on it especially, when he talks about the perceived Pop = bad. I think in edm, too many people, whether they realize it or not, focus too much on being different from the mainstream and the music suffers because of it.

EDM is a pop music form.
Anyway, I don't see this overwhelming wave of atonal, tuneless, antiaccessibility EDM that people complain about. The "minimal" stuff people whined about was a brief fad, but for some reason you and others are still tilting at the imaginary windmill of "minimal" or vocalless or hookless stuff that is supposedly "dominating" dance music and crowding out anything with a melody.

think you've got me mixed up with someone else. not that my opinion has anything to do with it, but i think what dominates dance music right now is too much repetition, not enough content, and too many white nerdy twenty somethings.

Your complaint is that producers are trying too hard to be different from "the mainstream." What aspect of "mainstream" music do you think they're avoiding? Vocals? Prominent hooks? Melody?
What do you mean by "mainstream" anyway? Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga?

i meant my opinion about what "dominates dance music" doesnt matter. my first opening opinion is my observation of a growing trend.
there isnt one particular aspect i hear being avoided, because theres some alt dance that has vocals, hooks, melodies, or all of it at once. the problem i hear, is the songs trying too hard to be different. a few cool ideas and general vibes can't make up for a ty song.

Different from what? In what ways are the songs "ty" despite having "cool ideas and general vibes?" You're being really vague.
Can you point to any examples of this "growing trend?"

Are you saying EDM has a cultural, stylistic, structural aesthetic to be 'pop music', or "if an EDM piece of music gets popular, it is pop music."
Its hard to say EDM is pop music, because I dont think the intent is there from a producer/artist perspective. Are most of the EDM Producers we currently enjoy the music of trying to make music to mass popularity standards? Structurally? Stylistically? Sure they're trying to make music that reaches people and makes it way through as many listeners as possible, but then again isn't that the motive of all music made, including classical...to be popular? So if you say, ok no its not about popularity or the interest in popularity, then you would have describe EDM music as culturally, stylistically, structurally in a traditional pop style. For me the long intros/outros, tracks without verse+hook type vocals, and average longer than 4 minute track lengths take away any potential for any EDM track to be 'Pop Music'. The tracks with radio length edits + vocals...sure you can call these EDM tracks pop form.
@OP. Dance music is not suffering from anything when it comes to the music itself (supression from outside sources is another story). Of all styles of music its the one that is doing interesting things more often than any other at the moment. Pretention from trolls on forums is the one of the few blemishes, but luckily its limited to a few select forums, and the masses have no idea about some of the toxic ideals and philosophies shared here about music...of all things.
