ableton help

hey guys,

i've never tried mixing with ableton before but since I don't have my equipment with me I figured i'd give it a shot.. I figured it all out pretty easily, my tracks are warped and mixed... however one problem i'm having is automating tempo...

I have the automation set up in the master channel and everything, but for some reason it doesn't register with playback... the tempo doesn't change...
Also, in the master automation tab, the "song tempo" is greyed out... i can still move the automation but nothing registers. I know this has something to do with it.

I read somewhere that this had to do with master/slave functions in ableton, but all my tracks are set to slave so i don't see how this can be the problem.

Please help!

Cheers
Polt
I made a video about tempo automation about a month ago. I dunno if it will help, but you can check it out here: http://thedjpodcast.com/episodes/episode-018/. If you are in Live and it won't let you automate a change, I've found it to be one of 2 things.

1) You are trying to change the value of a parameter some place other than its automation lane.

2) You made a change in, or somehow involved with, the session view and need to hit the "Back to Arrangement" button.

hmm this is exactly what i did. made the automation change, its all automated and everything. However, Song Tempo (under master) is greyed out.. and where the red dot is in the upperleft tempo window there is a grey dot.. which I'm guessing means ableton does not want to automate this parameter for whatever reason... I've only been using ableton for a very short period of time and have not been able to figure out what this is, any help would be appreciated.

That's your problem. You should just have warp enabled.

i do have warped enabled they are not set to slave sorry that box is greyed out too.. all the tracks are warped to the master tempo

Hi there,
Good to see a healthy amount of advice in this thread!

Glad to hear you've solved the problem! How are you finding mixing using Ableton? I've heard it can be overwhelming at times!!

Have you ever thought about going on a DJ course? especially as from what i've heard Ableton is fairly different to decks/cdjs!

I know that Point Blank run an online course in DJing using Ableton. You should take a look at the course: http://www.pointblankonline.net/abl...e-course-dj.php

I might sign up myself as it seems pretty thorough and in-depth.
Anyway good luck with your DJing!!!!

I've had loads of negative feedback from that online course!!

No i'm only messing i've never heard about it just laughing at your shameless plug.

Plug away though, i don't mind forum members sharing info like this. You can always learn something from them that you didn't know before :)

I guess Ableton could be a bit daunting when using it for the first time, but if you put in a few hour learning the app. and playing around it really becomes so simple and easy. But I guess that depends how far you decide to push it too.

It took me a long time of not getting anywhere with Live before one day it suddenly made sense all of a sudden. After using it now for a year or so, I'm still figuring new things out. It's great!
