Black people will especially mourn your loss. :p
quote: | West Virginia's Democratic Senator Robert Byrd was a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan while in his 20s and 30s, rising to the title of "Kleagle" and "Exalted Cyclops" of his local chapter. After leaving the group, Byrd spoke in favor of the Klan during his early political career. Though he claimed to have left the organization in 1943, Byrd wrote a letter in 1946 to the group's Imperial Wizard stating "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia." Byrd defended the Klan in his 1958 U.S. Senate campaign when he was 41 years old.
Byrd was the only Senator to vote against both African American U.S. Supreme Court nominees (liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas) and filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In a 2001 incident Byrd repeatedly used the phrase "white niggers" on a national television broadcast. |

That old coot? I would've taken Werther's Originals from him if he and I were on his porch together in some bygone, bucoloic afternoon. |

Dead before we could ever catch him in a seedy hotel room with a black, male prostitute. Such a shame. |

At least he understood his job, which was to represent his state at the federal level.
Sucks he was a racist for a good chunk of his life, but oh well, a great politician none the less. |

You would defend a man who filibustered the civil rights act, while rabidly attacking anyone who disagrees with this administration. What a fat ing muppet you are. |

People change, and what he did later counter his early mistakes in life quite well. |
