| Maybe some producers simply want to separate themselves from the music they make. |

1. They want to release different styles of music under different names.
2. They're ashamed of previous work and want to escape it.
3. Their previous work was quite popular and they want to try and write something else good without a reputation. |

some times it has to do with certain labels owning the rights to certain aliases. |

I take all that into consideration but it also gives the laymen that doesn't do his research the illusion that there are more producers out there than there really is when only a top handfull are really running the show.
But this is probably the bottom of the barrel answer compared to what others have said that makes more sense. |

| The mythology being promoted back in the heyday was that it was to create a supposed anonymity in order to put the audience first. Producers of EDM lurked in regular jobs, perhaps even producing regular music, but had alter egos they would don in order to truly reveal the extent of their abilities. It wasn't as though they had to make a living or a name for themselves and the DJ was also looming as the emerging center of attention. |
