NEW GENRE ALERT: Footwork tracks

I've been keeping this to myself for 6 months or so, because i like to play stuff no one's heard of and i like it when people come up the booth asking about what i play (sooo geeky, barf). So i dont want to speed up overexposure or anything.

I'll be very, very surprised if anyone here is familiar with this type of music or scene, unless you are from chicago. And even a lot of people on the north side of that city are unaware this exists just a few miles south. So be honest!

I've talked about how dance music has become too conventional and "safe", it's not taking enough risks and is falling into too many molds. Well, I simply cannot get enough of this kind of music ive been following lately. It's got to be the absolute weirdest ing music ive ever heard, and that's why i love it so much. But also because the patterns do not fall into a static grid like - a lot of it is recorded performed live, its mainly MPC music. And that can be a main factor in keeping this music from being exploited by the many DAW users out there. You talk about cymbal crashes and other elements falling into predictability? Well then maybe you'll like this. After analyzing this music, i found there are elements placed all over the frikn place. There are thirds, triplets, and off beat placements. It seems like people are just banging away buttons on an MPC at random times.

and best of all, crime has supposedly gone down with the rise of two weekly battle events in the south west side. it gives kids a place to vent their frustration and anger in a positive way.

Mike Paradinas (µ-Ziq) has made a mix of this stuff: http://www.mixcloud.com/mikep/mike-...otworkjuke-mix/ It has seen a surge of popularity within "urban" music in general due to the almighty music blogosphere.

The music is interesting in terms of structure and breaking out of familiar patterns, but all those ultra-repetitive vocal samples just do my head in too much for me to really get into it.

yup the UK scene has especially taken interest. I think planet Mu has a release of dj nate tracks.

the vocal repetition is a great technique i think, if done right. its sort of meditative, a stream of sound. there is a science term for this that's escaping me, when you repeat a vocal phrase with enough frequency it is understandable at first but soon it plays a trick on the mind and becomes incomprehensible. luckily the good djs ive heard play a mix of vocal repetitive tracks, and tracks that sound nothing like those, such as tracks that just use segments of prerecorded music. where else can you hear evanescence and isley brothers in the same set? LOL

That more or less sounds like minimalism, and for instance what Steve Reich did with "It's Gonna Rain": http://redbullmusicacademyradio.com/shows/1388/ (skip to around 10 mins)

i've been aware of footwork for a while
there are a lot of these small regional scene dance-centric types of music

musically most are basically variants of ghettotech. really its the dancing that is the cornerstone of the scene

juke (chicago)

jit (detroit)

krump (los angeles) (variant of hip hop dancing)

turf (san fransisco)

you know, i alllmost but "besides nefardec" in there.

when footwork fell in my lap, it immediately linked to the other regional US dance styles, but none of them compare to the chicago style IMO as far as eclectic sample sources, variety in the sound pallete, just more variety in general, its more rich and fertile. its def the only one you could get away with switching to in the middle of a dubstep or future garage type portion of a set. the others are just too static and hip hop related if that makes sense. never heard of turf though, i always heard the term hyphy for that style.

Just to piss montana off

apparently a lot of stuff is being made like this before & is labelled on DD sites as J-Tek.

whatever it is, I love the beats, revival or not, tony :p
