lol i was actually just thinking about this. if you put a swig of cheap , average brand X, top shelf brand Y, and like, some handcrafted, finely aged, carbon-filtered gold-plated diamond-encrusted vodka next to each other and were asked to find the highest quality swill, would most people be able to tell the difference? when you say "people have always been able to tell" is this ALL of the testers, or just a percentage?

me personally, i think i would have a hard time. it all tastes and smells like glue, it all burns going down, and it all gets me drunk quickly.

vodka is not my first choice for liquor obviously, heh. too many bad experiences in high school, i suppose.

I watched a blind taste test thing on 20/20 like 4 or 5 years ago using vodka, and trendy 20-30 something people in Manhatten. It was hilarious... the women were especially certain they could tell the difference between their admitted favorite Grey Goose and the average or bottom shelf . They used Goose, Absolut, Ketel, Belvedere, Smirnoff, and a couple other run of the mills.

The one chosen by most as the best tasting was the Smirnoff... haha. The people felt like total dips. But when it's mixed with anything, often times it's hard to distinguish.

The ones I posted on the last page are all small batch non-mass produced, which goes to your earlier point. All of them taste just fine over ice with a splash of water (or let the ice melt for 5 minutes) and a drop or 2 of lemon juice. If you haven't tried the Jean Marc XO I highly recommend it... very non-lighter fluid ;)

well, yeah, if you're giving a taste test with 80% cranberry juice or something, I might pick Popof.

did they really give a 'taste test' with mixed drinks? :wtf:

Dude... Popov ed me up something fierce in high school. Back then it was the only thing I could get my hands on. Worst ever! lol

But yeah, the taste test was done in 2 different ways... they did it with just vodka martini's and mixed drinks. Smirnoff for the win. :stongue:

hey, $10/handle only goes so far!

It's pretty much the official choice of underage binge drinkers everywhere.

Oh god. I had a fifth of Potter's vodka once... $10 for that.

Christ that was a bad weekend :(

When we did it in High School pretty much everybody could tell. I'm sure some people can't and that 20/20 thing sounds odd, but from my experience most people have been able to tell the difference between like Sky/Smirnoff/etc and Grey Goose/etc.

Really doesn't seem like the extra $10-15 make a difference, but they really do.

see i figured the results would be pretty similar to what you described. ing smirnoff, go figure. that is garbage.

did you have to go to a specialized liquor store for that jean marc xo stuff or maybe order it online or something? i've never heard of the brand nor seen it in any liquor store around here.

We're talking about trendy socialites in NYC though, who don't really know anything. None of those bitches claiming to be vodka connoisseurs ever drank it strait... it was obvious. They're a bartender's best friend- shell out $15 for a Grey Goose cosmo filled with bottom shelf vodka and they'll never know. :p

I order it off the internet. The only places I've seen it in a store are some high dollar liquer store in Houston, and Naples, FL... and in a 5 star steak house in Tampa. PM me your address and I'll have one shipped to you man... on the house ;)

yeah, well, Popov is $10/handle--not fifth.

Maybe Popov is a conservative thing.
