Takes time to find good stuff, thats all it really is Stef... You won't find what you want by going out to afters a few times a year and listening to a few mixes ppl throw at you ;)

Takes much more time nowadays, but it's out there.

There is a myth in dance music that makes a lot of djs rush to be the first one to play tracks, to showcase stuff that only they might have in their bag (or friends), and to keep buying new music non stop. I've been guilty of this, and I am sure that other hobby people (as well as those that want more and play out often) can relate to this.

The problem with this, is that you start to collect a lot of music that has a limited shelf life and after playing the tracks a few times, you forget about them and move on...maybe stumbling across them once in awhile. It is one of the major things that turned me off dance music for a little while (that and concentrating on learning how to play guitar better)...the getting in the habit of sifting through hours of just to find that golden egg.

It takes too much time. I've started to concentrate more on using what you have then always needing something that has been released less than a day. (or playing promos just because they are promos...i don't get that many, but out of all of the ones i get sent...it is rare to find a good one.) You didn't build up those big collections to not use them right? To possibly bring more sounds into a mix and a little diversity?

This is the problem with this cd. (especially cd 2) I think live in a club chewing my face off or drunk it would go over quite well, and i would rave to it. It does not fly too much being released on a medium meant for repeat consumption at home/car/wherever you listen to this.

Many of the same sounds over and over and over, no build or big payoff, nothing that stands out particularly. Just some soulless big room clap clap tech house (albeit mixed extremely well, which we all know that this is what John is know for...so no surprises here). You guys know i like tech house, but would it kill to have a twist, maybe a surprise and a little variety? Check out the Berghain and Panorama series to see what i mean by this. Yes it is on the tech house tip...but it has the "je ne sais quoi" that makes you keep going back and listening to it even a long time later.

This cd fails so hard at this, and it will leave the fanboys happy...until they forget about the cd 2 weeks later and move to something new.

I just happen to think that John is way better than this "safe" effort. Bedrock has not been releasing good music for a long time now, and it would be nice if he got over his Guy J fetish. I've never gotten the point of his productions, save a few. He must have pictures of John and Sasha doing weird things to each other in the shower i think or something.

We are moving more and more into the realms of disposable music. How many tracks would you say that you have seen come out this year will be considered classics in a few years? The writing has been on the wall for years, but with everyone being a dj now...(and i mean everyone, i'm even teaching the gf to beatmatch vinyl:p) people are just churning out stuff so that the bedroom guy can feel like he is playing fresh music...when in reality the only thing fresh is the release date.

i had too much coffee lulz.

extremely good post and that's exactly how i feel when i dig through tracks week in and week out.

I can't remember the last time I found a choon that will be a classic. Maybe John Roberts - Pruned but that was last year and it might only be in my mind.

I've got so much gold from the 90's hidden away...and i intend to use them...most of the sampling in new releases blatantly comes from them anyway. (and when i mean blatantly...i mean just rearranged a bit in a sequencer and given a new name that credits the original work 0...i'm especially looking at you Soul Clap:p )

lazy lazy lazy.

if it cost them money to put out tracks like in the past, you might see a bit more quality control. Anyone want to start a label with me? I might be the only dance music aficionado that doesn't have one these days.

PS RIP Inbeat. I feel so guilty that i didn't support them enough.

pps ostrich man is nadir, not me...bird is the word cholo.
Dj Nacht
I do think this song is pretty massive but I dunno if it will be classic.

Ian O'Donovan - Aurora Borealis

the name reminds me of a certain old school techno track that we both love:p

i'll peep it when i am around some speakers:)

excellent post, publication-worthy review, except for the shower part :p

I think it takes more skill for a dj to throw in a classic and make it sound fresh within his/her set. It's almost as if how you play the track takes even more prominence than what u play.

diggers used to be the master of using filler tracks to set up the big bomb...this cd is all filler.

zeKsg
The most exotic stuff came from the deep techno/clr area(not all of them)

But the upcoming CLR35 release the Marcel Dettmann and PVH remix puts out some interesting stuff.
