Doctor: "You have cancer."
Christopher Hitchens: "Oh hell, god does exist, I'm converted!"

Honestly, it's ridiculous - the amount of people who claim to convert after their life takes a wrong turn. It makes no sense and just furthers my belief that religion is a crutch for weak-minded people to make sense of the chaos around them because they can't accept for what it is.

Religion would be fantastic if people only became religious on their death bed. It wouldn't impact the world, and it might comfort the dying person.

It really does make sense. I should write a book.

I don't have any more use for a book which aims to tell me why god is not great than I do a book explaining why unicorns do not fly.

Though if youve managed some lets say 70 years without god would be such a shame to convert in your last days. besides, what are the odds for you to pick the right god from all that had come in the history of the human race. Picking JC thinking that its a sure bet might cost you an eternity in hades.

Would you say he is like the AOL of religious discussion?

Lira, I think you dislike those three books by Harris, Dawkins and Hitchens because you're not a noob to atheism. Those are great books for someone just beginning to realize that religion is bull, and wants to find out more about atheism. It tells you the things you already know or suspect but are afraid to say or even think and tells you that they're OK. An atheist of many years, might find them boring, empty, or "cheap", though. Specially one with a degree in Philosophy. :p

Sure enough, perhaps I'm not really the target audience, that could well be the reason...

My arguments would then be unfair as I'm probably judging them to be something they weren't trying to be.

Ironically, I'm not sure MrJiveBoJingles and RJT are atheists - and they're the only ones around here with a degree in philosophy, as far as I'm aware of :p

Ok, so pretty much people with philosophy degrees think that new atheists are the ayn rands of atheism? Not surprised TBH.

Seriously. Holy hell I've never seen someone seem so try-hard and fail so miserably.

And that's including some of the epically horrible trolls we've had around these parts.
