Well Dell and HP is not really lower quality stuff...you can go to www.alienware.com and still find some great custom built laptops for good prices.

HP has VoodooPC, Dell has Alienware. These are their high end gaming divisions.

Regarding tomshardware... did they test voodoos and aliens or the cheap futureshop/staples/costco/retail line? It's totally different product from totally different divisions and manufacturing facilities.

if you think you need crazy specs to have a mac that runs like a champ then you obviously dont know anything about mac. osx is a unix-based operation system. people who run unix/linux/bsd know you can have that running well in a low end computer.

so you want to spend ~2K for something similar to a macbook pro, but you don't want to buy an actual macbook pro, which you could get for $1849 for the base 15"?

does not compute..

Ok I wasnt specific enough, im getting a laptop for audio production. Want a laptop so I can travel and make music, design sounds, etc. I just want something pretty powerful that will last me for years and can handle all the processing that I will put it through. I already made my decision and am buying from the states, found a good laptop for about 2,3000$. Thanks for the replies guys, definitely helped make my decision.

so which card is it? or does it come with both?

I don't know what you call hot, macs heat up too no worries, but hey you can make macaroni with it lol

bcope
it comes with both, and the OS switches between them dynamically to conserve battery life etc.

People who know anything about computers know that sometimes the OS just doesn't matter. When you are ripping through video, or rendering, or what ever, sometimes the hardware is all that matters.

I'm a *nix guy, but I cannot stand Mac bull, and I can smell it a mile away. You have said that the mac will be better, without even knowing what he is going to be using it for.

From Toms, 5 laptops that beat the macbooks in specs:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ma...re-7,10191.html

The macbooks always win in size, but you always pay for that in price. So if you can live with a larger size to save on cash, do it.
