Just curious, do you guys hp kick samples, like vengeance kicks? They say that they are ready to use, but they still have massive low end energy. Since i'm only producing on headphones, i feel i miss something. If i do hp around 30hz, sound just change totally, especially in bass. And i don't know which one to trust. Orginal or the high passed sound. Of course hp sound more clear, but maybe not so warm and puncy. i need buy monitors

There really isn't one rule. We cant really tell you "yeah, always high pass at 30 hz" because not every kick needs that and not every track needs that. Its entirely dependent on the track and the choice of sample.

That would probably help, but buy the best ones you can afford.

I know there is no rules, but listening trance on these days, sounds like all the bass is totally gone. That's why i'm curious.

I do have hd-650 phones, which are pretty expensive and good, but still i need to buy monitors.

I'm kinda worried about how much the sound change if i put hp to bass. Whole sound character change, or at least i hear that in on my headphones.

the bass is gone because you can raise the overall level more that way. Going by what I hear at beatport lately, i wouldn't take your mixing cues from recent trance.

I typically hi-pass sampled kick (and/or the entire drum buss) to get rid of any low-frequency energy, or just to knock out some low-end boominess, or when layering samples. I don't always want a kick that is thumping my chest, so the cutoff point varies with the sample and song.

Also, good monitors will help, but it's very helpful to use a spectrum analyzer to see what's going on in the low (e.g., <50Hz) range when high-passing your kick. You won't always hear those lowest frequencies anyway, but they can eat up your headroom, so seeing what's there is important. Having a pre-/post-EQ selector for your spectrum analyzer is even more helpful - one of the many features I love about FabFilter Pro-Q BTW - it's got a pre-/post-SA built into it (as do some other EQs [so I don't come across as an info-mercial]),

I hi-pass most kicks at 40-50 hz and put a notch on 240-270 hz. The notch will bring out the lowlows a little bit.

i hipass around 35-40hz w/ no more than a 2pole/12db filter. i don't do it on every kick and i only do it to see if i can get more headroom out of a track, if it's not making a difference then why with it.

first do no harm :)

Drop the level of your kick down to around -10 -12 and mix everything else around it if not already doing so. EQ everything including kicks I say...all to taste of course.

I don't EQ kicks generally, especially at lower frequencies because of this

Perhaps something to keep in mind.

PS
The effect occurs less at higher frequencies I think so low passes aren't as bad as high passes.

If you decide to highpass though make sure you use Sonnox EQ which has the cleanest low cut I know in the box.

Yeah, I like how in logic it takes even a pro 3 minutes to get 8 bassdrums down on his sequencer.

Streamline working.
