I know of certain artists like J00F being classified as Psy Trance, but what exactly separates this from any other kind of trance?

ihmo you should look back in the past more to really understand "psychedelic trance" phenomenon ;)
some basic facts about the psy scene you can find: Here also check out some good psy forums for more info and new releases: Here - hope it will help :)

You can easily read up on the history of the music and how it evolved differently to European trance.
Musically, it tends to be faster, less melodic and more acidic than normal trance, and is frequently composed in the Phrygian scale, which gives it a Middle Eastern sound. The mood is rarely uplifting or euphoric, but rather menacing, dark or aggressive. Interestingly, the Phrygian scale is also commonly used by metal, deathcore and other hard rock musicians, which is probably why there's such a strong cross-over between the psy-trance and metal scenes.
The name comes from the scene's drug of choice: LSD, rather than ecstasy of Euro trance. If you want to summarise the difference in one comparison, European trance is a musical simulation of ecstasy while psy-trance is a musical simulation of acid.

That's a great way to describe it. So the big question is, what artists would you recommend? Like I said before (and I'm not really sure if he strictly fits into the psy-trance genre), I've heard a lot of John 00 Fleming, but the only other psy-trance artists that I've heard of are Infected Mushroom and 1200 micrograms.
From what I've heard, I really dig J00F's sound, so are there any other similar artists out there that I might like?
trancypantzzz
i don't think he plays anything that is psychedelic.
srussell0018
is this?

J00F generally plays both progressive, and harder trance with a touch of full-on. You might like Ovnimoon, Suntree, Freq, Liquid Soul, Gaudium, Ace Ventura, and maybe a little bit of Vibrasphere for a more calming psytrance experience. However, if you want the more intense stuff, you may be disappointed in how ty most full-on releases are.

Ooh, I dunno about that, he used to play a lot of Astrix, 1200 Mics, and he still bumps Xerox & Illumination from time to time. His old school Colorsfest 02 set on TA was what got me into psytrance.

Well, I don't really like pure psy trance. I think it's grooveless speed-demon music stocked full of cheesy sci-fi bull and pseudo-spiritual drug blather. I don't take acid, either.
J00F has always played more progressive trance and prog-psy alongside pure psy trance. Obvious recommendations: 00.db, Digital Blonde, Vibrasphere, Jaia, FREq, 12 Moons, Solar Fields etc. Check out Domesticated's mixes in DJ Promotion. Also, if you haven't heard the Goa Mix yet, stop what you're doing and download it.
srussell0018
Do you mean the Oakenfold Goa Mix? Not sure which one you mean
SYSTEM-J
Yeah, the Oakenfold Goa Mix. Psy-bores will tell you there's a difference between goa and psy trance, but goa is just the older, more melodic stuff.
srussell0018
Yeah, I have that and like it a lot. Didn't know the relation between Goa and Psy until now.

Also, I didn't get any response in the unknown tracks forum, but if anyone subscribes to the J00F podcast, in episode 87, anyone know what track is playing around 1:18:10? Love that breakdown.
I heard it in a Gareth Emery podcast as well, but I can't remember which one.
