Most genres have generic conventions that makes them recognisable bodies of music. Everyone knows that, you don't enlighten anyone by pointing it out. However, epic trance has nothing but generic elements. It has millions of them. The supersaw is just one sound. There's also the massive breakdown, the giant anthemic melody, the snare roll, the one-note off-beat rolling bass, the hi-hat spam attack percussion, the uniformly sickly uplifting mood. And that's before we get onto the other synth sounds you can't escape from. Even the track titles are endlessly ing clichéd.
You'll find that people on TA bash brostep and electro house just as much as they do epic trance. We don't like generic tracks, whatever the genre.
Well, IMHO, the quality of a certain element in music isn't decided by how commonly it's used, so I consider the whole copy-paste argument pointless and irrelevant. Sure, you get bored of a certain sound after a while, but even the most cynical record companies realizes they need to change their sound sooner or later, because of hurt sales (It used to be like this before they could use pirates as scapegoats).
No, I think it all has to do with fifth impression or so. Why fifth? Because first impression might totally different from the impression you get when you've gotten used to this new sound. 'Cause, to be honest, it's all about what we WANT to hear.

On a more related note, this trend most likely won't go away anytime soon. In an industry that, like it or not is based mostly around money, the artists tend to go where the money is. People here may not like it, but the majority of the people who are going out to the larger, more profitable shows, want to hear the things you call cliche and overused.
It's not necessarily changing the genre in general, but more the commercial front of the genre. There are always lesser known artists who will be putting out tracks that are unique and interesting, but unfortunately the majority are only interested in the tracks that are simple (but apparently effective) in "catching the ear" of the average listener.
You'll always be able to find the music that you DO like, this trend is just making it harder to sift through all of what you don't like.
That being said, there are certain artists who are able to incorporate some of these generic sounds as their own, and are able to put their own touch on tracks to keep at least some sense of individuality in their music (kind of like the Basshunter/Sean Tyas example that pointPI made).

surely something unique and interesting is more likely to catch even the most casual of listener's ear, compared to something is generic, bland and same same?
i see where you are coming from and it seems most of the big trance labels have based their theories and companies on exactly what you are saying - I just dont get why its so - it doesnt seem to make sense to me :?

This would be true if a) Trance sales weren't utterly (1000 downloads for a Trance track is very good) and b) there would be a lot of Trance clubs. But there aren't many clubs that play Trance. Most citys only have one, or two and at these only the big DJs play.
