*!!!!!!!!!!!!!Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This review is probably going to be a complete buzzkill for anyone who had the time of their lives last night so remember that this is just my opinion and it's not personal. I'm happy as can be that you saw Jesus in person last night and that you still have 'trance' in your pants.
As predicted, the snoop dogg concert clean up went on until about 12:30. Not surprising as there was no way the whole doors at 10 thing was going to mean that the club would be ready. I really give it to Guvernments staff; they really work their ass off for what they do. That clean up was horribly prepared and the people who organized it should be ashamed, f*cking ashamed to have the security people do the job of roadies.
Anyways, when the night finally started, the room packed up instantly (do these people wait in the walls until they hear the cue?) and Mark Oliver was playing the same dull commercial progressive house that he always spins when he opens. It gave time to see some old faces on the patio before the supposed mayhem was about to begin.
I forget what time Tyas came on but it couldn't have been much past 1:30 which is very reasonable considering the circumstances. He opened with some stuff that sounded like the first hour of a Carl Cox set from 2001 expect a lot more bland, boring and directionless. Still, the lack of elements gave me some hope that he had been saving the big guns. I have to admit that at this point, the room was so overheated that I simply could not take it so I headed for the patio. I can't remember much between his opening 10 minutes and lift but my god, this guy played easily the worst set I've heard in that room since A&B in 2007 (I've also seen Sander K three times in that room since 2007 so now you really know what I mean). Really, really bad. Some stuff was borderline Euro and some of those vocals do not even belong on Z103's compilations. I usually don't have a problem with DJ's drinking or getting completely f*cked up on whatever their drug of choice is but this time, I really believe this guy needs to chill out. Banging your head that hard and throwing your arms around to that kind of cheese, yelling like that on the mic... not impressive at all.
Everyone I talked to throughout the night had told me they came for Simon Patterson. Having not been impressed with anything he's done except Panic Attack, I was skeptical but also realised that Guv was the best way to see him. Wow, what a fail. If this is the best that armada/big name beatport chart toppers have to offer, than this is really sad. This guy has absolutely no idea how to DJ. Every track had at least 4 minutes of breakdowns with overly hard intro's/outro's that made no sense with the rest of the song. I have zero clue what the hype is about this guy, he's basically like every other discover/spinnin' artist. This is exactly why the trance scene is being degraded more and more everyday. Big intro, huge breakdown *energy to do anything else is lost here*, then big outro. Not impressed. I ended up leaving around 3:30 because I simply could not take any more of it. I'm sure someone will predictably reply "oh, you left when it just was getting good". Frankly, I don't give a . They had atleast 2 and a half hours to do something for me and they didn't. Not 1 song I remember even being respectable; not good, respectable.
This has been my first time back to Guv in about a year. I had not realized the crowd has gotten this bad. We aren't talking Skasian bad, we are talking Jersey Shore bad. It was extremely busy as well which isn't anything out of the norm, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that there was no air conditioning in there and a mighty pathetic way to try and enjoy a set. I had at least 3 drinks spilled on me, some make up spilled on my pants (ask shaya about this story lol) but this is just the normal guv stuff.
4/10 for me. |

actually it opened late because snoop decided to take longer to get on stage. Doors were at 7:30 btw. We did the load out (clean up) in record time. Disorganized? Really? We did 2 hours work in less than an hour thanks to great organization and the generous help from security who did not have to help at all. If you felt that strongly about it an extra hand would have been welcome ;) :) It was hilarious having a live audience watch the tear down i must say LOL

from my point of view (overlooking the whole club) the crowd was rockin within 20 mins of opening. I didnt see any dullness there at all! And it continued after the headliners came on.

yeah big crowds have a tendency to produce run ins of some sort. Thats at ANY club though. So you dont like skasians or jersey shore, so who exactly do you like?

What I think made it even worseee was that there was hip hop playing in the drink and on skybar, if I wanted to hear hip hop I could go to the other 500 or however many clubs around Toronto :whip: |

Fantastic review . I was there and I can agree with every point you made. Guv is just a disaster and possibly the worst crowd I've ever seen in ages. 18 yr old bimbos high on cocaine pushing and shoving everyone on the patio..wow. last night sealed the deal for me for a long long time.
Organization: 4/10
music: 3.5/10 ( just bass bass bass and 10 min breakdowns at every song, sorry thats not music)
sounds quality: 2.5/10
Crowd: 0.5/10 |
