Really? It's been pretty trendy in the last few years. Also known as "laptop ambient" or "hipster-chill" (okay, possibly not)

I might have never head of it before because all the Ambient sounded the same to me :o

I can safely assume you know nothing about ambient music then.

Does Gas and Loscil really count as "drone" ambient? It sounds just like the same blueprint for classic ambient music Brian Eno established with Thursday Afternoon and Discreet Music to me.

Drone ambient for me has always been the extremely static and minimalistic soundscapes, like the stuff from Dark Duck Project. It certainly isn't popular in any sort of hipster circle, nor has it ever had any sort of mainstream popularity what so ever.

Perhaps not amongst pedantic ambient scholars, but Pitchfork were describing Gas as "drone" a good decade ago, and it set the tone for usage on similar material since then. Certainly I've seen these artists, and others like William Basinski described repeatedly as drone by the taste-makers. I can't be bothered for a genre argument about the term. If it makes you feel better, scratch out "drone" in my posts and replace it with "laptop" again. It's the body of music I'm discussing, not the nomenclature.

Anyway, I've just created a swirling ethereal piece of ambient by slowing down the intro of a record using this program. As a prank I might submit it as a demo to a few labels and see if they'll be interested.

My favorite ambient album ever, FSOL - Lifeforms. Oh the summer of acid :)

Have you heard their Essential Mix from 1993? If you like Lifeforms you should definitely get hold of it. It's a complete mind.

I'm generally not into that style so much anymore, but I used to absolutely worship those guys. They put so much into everything they do, music, print, web, text, etc. You've piqued my interest though, so I'll see if I can find that E-mix in Soulseek.
