And what about vox not to mention your perc is a bit light (most the projects I've done go in to the dozens).

Where's your dulcimer, cello and basses? No guitar?

@Lunar Phase 7 - I'm a score engineer. I can't actually think of a project that was less than 200 tracks before even getting in to FX. Two mac pro's get eaten up in heartbeat.

We usually have separate dedicated PTHD4 rigs for each component: Orch, Synth and Mix rig are the most basic setups.

Makes sense.

Jesus dunno how you guys do it!

I thought we were talking normal EDM production here, and I was thinking some people are being ing ridiculous. But that works now.

so I'm going to buy this thing in the next few days. One thing i'm having trouble figuring out is whether nodes work in 64 bit mode. The node tab does not show itself when running 64 bit.

edit and it seems it isn't supported. Oy ve.

Just the other day it spiked for me, rather early in the song making process and I basically flipped out lol... no more work was done that day.

Nope, nodes not yet supported for 64 bit mode yet....I say yet because it is on the major list of things that will be supported by apple in a future update.

Tell me

The most recent iMacs,

can I add a second hard drive or do I need to run an external one for sample data?

I've really got a Logic itch

1 drive. I wish I could find another 2009 mac pro but nothing is showing up on craigslist. They were the best mac pros by far. Anyways, more about nodes. Right now, if I work in 32 bit, I run into the low ram message despite having 32 gigs on the machine. I'm wondering, if I have 2 machines , would that ease the ram overhead so that I could run in 32 bits using the kontakt memory server ? And how exactly do nodes work ? Is the audio sent via the network cable ? Is that enough bandwidth ? Do you use both ports ?

I think it will be simpler if I just use VSL ensemble pro to use vsts on the other mac.

Not true. The 27" can take two. I'd go one SSD (system and current project with files copied to working directory) and one normal 7200 HHD for samples and everything else.

As for the ram issue, nodes don't facilitate the sharing of ram, only CPU power....but the kontakt memory server is a way of bypassing the 32bit memory limit, not that it actually applies to mac in that way becuase it's got a 64bit EFI but I digress.

The short answer is you'll gain more cpu by using nodes, but then have a RAM issue but if you can work in Kontact for your samples and use the KMS, then you'll be good.

I would do it anyway, as it's only a matter of time until they address the 64 bit thing with nodes.

wow seriously? is it 2,5"? how come apple seems to do everything right with the imacs. if it only came in black.

only 1 firewire kinda sucks. I would get the imac but I honestly don't like things that I can't expand. And I like things that match. 4 bays for hardrives is kinda important as in my current one, I have 1tb for system and 2 x 3 terabytes for samples and they are all pretty much half full which is about as much as you want to fill your hardrives.

I think I will just get the exact same setup and use VSL ensemble pro to run some things on the other computer until 64 bit nodes are supported as even with the kms , the ram limitation is easily hit.

Check this out

It seems the Imac 27 is about as powerful as the quad core mac pro. Not sure how this would translate to audio processing but still. In fact the quad core is about the same speed as the older generation 8 cores that sold for a bit more.

the mac pros are just awful looking. cant have that around the house now can i. all the cables and too. no i like the imac but im waiting for bluray and hdmi on it.

I like the way the mac pro looks. And Having 2 of them next to each other would look . The student discount isn't what it was 2 years ago. I guess the figured out everyone was just putting in random school ID numbers.
