Yeah, I have a couple buddies who are Freemasons and we've talked about it a bunch of times. Basically it's just a group who meets and once a month or something like that for dinners and various events. I think some meetings are mandatory and others are not. There are different levels within the organization and you start at number 1 I believe. There are certain rites of passage and ceremonies you have to do to get to the next level. For the most part it's a fun thing for a lot of guys and they do indeed do a lot of positive things within the community. But they are apparently sworn to secrecy about anything that happens at meetings. I also know my buddy loves to have there symbolism everywhere, as this sometimes helps him in certain situations like a parking ticket or speeding ticket if the cop is a member too.
Where the "world domination" stuff comes in from the past mostly, where there were connections to these type groups and the upper leaders such as George Washington (if you look at how they designed the streets in Washington DC you'll see lots of Freemason imagery).
For the most part I don't think that stuff is still happening, or at the very least it's only the highest members who are at a 200-300 level who would have knowledge of it. A lot of very powerful people in high positions around the world have those member ratings, and there are certainly meeting that only they get invited too.

My grandfather, father and uncle are all Freemasons - Scottish rite. I'll be joining towards the start of next year.
