Anybody play a musical instrument or learning one?
I used to play guitar for few years. It didn't come natural to me, I didn't have the finger strength and flexibility for cords. I don't know if it matters but I didn't grow up in a musical family. Some people pick up rhythm and harmony quickly. Or hear a song and be able to play it without seeing the notes for it. I'm not like that.
I'm now thinking of giving the harmonica a try. Anyone else ever play it? Or wanted to? I like how portable and inexpensive it is and I also like the blues and how it sounds. One of things that is problematic with any instrument is finding the time to practice and a place where you can learn to play without driving people crazy listening to you do repetitive scales and parts of a song you're trying to master.

trumpet, guitar, keyboard/piano, also electronic music stuff.
however I'm not grade 10 in anything so it is all pretty much hobby.
each year I improve a little bit with each instrument.
I've played harmonica and have one, however it to me is far more limited from the other three instruments. I also have a violin but I have yet to rosin it. Got everything quite cheap, well within the hobby range.

However I am learning piano and guitar now, guitar seems far simpler so far, I am having troubles with "aiming" on the piano... But yeah, apart from that, it's going pretty well.
I have never played a harmonica, so I can't really help you with that... It looks pretty damn tough to me.

guitar is more complex than piano imo.
playing Piano is mostly finger dexterity and learning to think of both hands as one (and each hand and finger as a seperate entity)imo
the guitar imo has a lot more complexity in terms of more intricate finger placement as well as in the case of electric guitars far more paramaters than piano with pedals.
both of course require skill to master but guitar imo is more complex.

I like to be all in or not at all. I find after a long lapse it takes a lot just to get back to where I was. To me its like exercise, if you fall out of a routine your done for.
I find at the beginner/intermediate stage its not very creative. You are just memorizing songs others have written and performing them like an amateur. That's part of my problem I get frustrated and want be able to have fun and not sound like a hack, even though its just a hobby. I mean whats the point of doing something sub par. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist. I just hate it when my desire exceeds my ability.

hell no dude. you may be able to manipulate the sound a bit more with a guitar (ie vibrato, bends, etc) but piano is far more complex. prime example: piano music = master clef. guitar music = treble clef. piano = your left hand is playing in a separate clef than your right hand at many times. guitar = your left hand is fingering the notes, your right is performing the rhythm.
and intricate finger placement my ass. guitar finger placement is all patterns that never change regardless of the position on the fret board. you will never be able to mimic note-for-note the most complex piano pieces with a guitar; conversely, the piano can come pretty damn close to emulating anything the guitar can play (sans certain types of sound manipulation such as bends like i mentioned earlier).

I played classical guitar that required more finger strength than electric. I agree the notes aren't laid out in a linear fashion like a piano. I always found that part difficult. I only was able to master the first position and some of the second position. It's also true every instrument has its pros and cons.

I played piano since I was a kid. I got formal lessons for about 12 years, but stopped when I was about 17. I still play sometimes on our keyboard synths, but I really wish we had something with weighted keys - It feels really weird without them.

Meh, I can play guitar a little bit, but not very well at all :p
Unfortunately, due to not practicing much over the years, my piano skills aren't so crash hot now either. I can still play things by ear though, mostly.
